  • How to Bootstrap Your Start Up Fashion Business

How to Bootstrap Your Start Up Fashion Business Starting a fashion business can be an exhilarating journey, but it often comes with the challenge of securing adequate funding. For many aspiring entrepreneurs, traditional financing options may not be feasible, leading them to explore alternative avenues. In this blog post, we’ll delve into effective bootstrapping strategies tailored for financing your fashion business on a budget. Whether you're launching a clothing line, a consulting service, or a sustainable fashion venture, these practical tips will help you maximize your resources and bootstrap your start up fashion business and build a successful brand without breaking the bank. Designer reviewing fabric swatches Start Lean : Begin by assessing your minimum viable product (MVP) - the simplest version of your product that still meets customer needs. This could mean launching with a limited range of products or starting with made-to-order items to minimize initial inventory costs. Utilize Personal Funds : Use your own savings or personal investments to cover initial expenses such as product development, branding, and website setup. This allows you to maintain full control over your business without taking on debt. Pre-Sell Products : Generate revenue upfront by offering pre-orders or crowdfunding campaigns for your products. This not only provides validation for your business idea but also helps fund production without the need for upfront capital. Negotiate Terms with Suppliers : Build relationships with suppliers and negotiate favorable payment terms such as extended credit or consignment arrangements. This can help you conserve cash flow and reduce the need for large upfront payments. Explore Alternative Funding Sources : Look for alternative funding sources such as grants, pitch competitions, or small business loans with low interest rates. Additionally, consider platforms like Kiva or microfinance institutions that offer small loans to entrepreneurs. Bootstrapped Marketing : Leverage low-cost marketing channels such as social media, influencer partnerships, and word-of-mouth to promote your brand. Focus on creating engaging content and building a community around your brand without relying heavily on paid advertising. DIY Branding and Design : Save money on branding and design by learning basic graphic design skills or using affordable online tools and templates. Invest time in creating a cohesive brand identity that reflects your vision and resonates with your target audience. Maximize Online Sales Channels : Start selling through online marketplaces like Etsy, eBay, or Amazon to reach a wider audience without the overhead costs of a physical store. As your business grows, you can explore options for launching your own e-commerce website. Minimize Overhead Expenses : Keep overhead expenses low by working from home, sharing office space, or opting for virtual services instead of hiring full-time staff. Be frugal with expenses and prioritize investments that directly contribute to revenue generation. Iterate and Refine : Continuously monitor your finances and performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and optimization. Stay agile and be willing to iterate on your business model based on feedback and market trends. By implementing these bootstrapping strategies, you can launch and grow your fashion business on a budget while maintaining financial sustainability and control over your operations. Remember, resourcefulness and creativity are key attributes of successful bootstrapped entrepreneurs. • Storytelling Through Avant-Garde Design

Kelli in one of her own designs. The puffy sleeves and the branches were a true challenge to do my own makeup and hair, but I wanted everything here to be 100% me in every way. Designer/MUAH: Me, Photographer: @tomluptonphotos , My left-handed right hand man: @hdlmonkey , Location: @newwavestudiopdx For some designers, fashion is about selling garments. For others, it's about storytelling—an intimate, expressive art form that transcends trends and seasons. Emerging designer Kelli McDonough of inkthethink, falls into the latter category, crafting deeply personal narratives and storytelling through avant-garde design. Behind the Scenes with Ink The Think Peek into the world of inkthethink studio in our exclusive interview After studying at the Portland Fashion Institute, Kelli took the runway by storm at FashioNxt's Emerging Designer competition in 2023, later closing the show in 2024. But instead of following a conventional path, she found inspiration in costume design, influenced by their time with the Portland Opera and Renegade Opera. The result? A collection born from raw emotion—sometimes melancholic, sometimes hauntingly beautiful, but always sincere. Kelli showing her deconstructed puffer crop jacket design For Kelli, the runway is not about commerce but communication. "I never thought I was showcasing on the runway to sell 'clothes,' but to showcase how my brain works and how it can be translated into garments". In a move that speaks to her passion for artistic collaboration, all runway garments are now being donated to Renegade Opera, an organization that thrives on innovation and creative storytelling. As Kelli steps away from large-scale projects for now, her home studio is alive with experimentation—proving that a designer's journey never truly pauses. What lies ahead? Kelli has an exciting vision of leading creative direction for a brand that embraces bold storytelling, and with her dedication, it's only a matter of time. Looks from inkthethink Childhood Escapism Collection 2024. Photograpy: Tom Lupton ifd: Kelli, tell us about your journey into design: Kelli: "Costume design was the last thing on my mind while I spent at Portland Fashion Institute. When I had the opportunity to compete in FashioNXT's Emerging Designer competition in 2023 and close out the show in 2024, the only thing that made sense to me was the more avant-garde storytelling route. I saw how beautifully a story could be told through costumes when I spent time at the Portland Opera and Renegade Opera. It was really important for me to be sincere and genuine by creating pieces that developed from true moments in time for me. I will admit most of the moments I chose are pretty sad and even somewhat morbid, but it is often from tragedy that we seek a kind of torturous beauty that is universally understood." Costume Designs from The Portland Opera During runway shows, many people ask about the prices and where the garments may be sold. They are often perplexed and confused when I have no immediate answer. I never thought I was showcasing on the runway to sell "clothes," but to showcase how my brain works and how it can be translated into garments: I am promoting myself. Most people say, "I have a passion for fashion," but mine is more, “I happen to have fashion for my passions”.   All the garments created for both runway shows are being donated to Renegade Opera, which does such creative and amazing work! You will not be disappointed when you go see them. I always want to bask in the talent and energy of others who so generously share it. I would love to someday be a company's creative director with a similar creative vision. I know it will take time and hard work, but I will do the job as long as possible.  Childhood Escapism Collection 2024 at FashioNXT. Runway photos by pixelnickphotography ifd: Kelli what's next? I am currently taking a little time off from big projects, but I am in my home studio experimenting and trying all the other little things that have been put on the back burner. The last two years out of school have been so adventurous and been a journey that I could not have imagined thus far, so I am not about to prophesize. FashioNXT 2023 People's Choice Winner Kelli provides consulting services for design, pattern creation, and prototyping. She mentions that her clients can choose their level of involvement in the process to help realize something they've always desired or to experiment as much as they wish. This can range from casual, formal, and costume to Avant-garde styles. Kelli can support any part of the process, from teaching how to use a sewing machine to altering and bringing their own sketches to life.  Kelli can be reached at: Kelli@inkthethink.com View more of Kelli's work, visit Ink the Think website here: https://inkthethink.com Work from Kellis portfolio Thank you for sharing your story with us Kelli!!

  • How to Build a Thriving Fashion Business in Today's Competitive Industry

Build Your Thriving Fashion Business The fashion industry is dynamic, creative, and full of opportunities. However, high production costs, inventory management, and fierce competition make it challenging for aspiring designers to establish and grow their businesses. As a country, we are overproducing products, leading to significant waste and environmental impact. It's crucial to support less consumerism while acknowledging that there is still a need and opportunity for fashion designers to create meaningful products. These products must be designed thoughtfully and consciously, with a clear purpose, a compelling story, and a strong connection to the users they serve. By combining innovative strategies, leveraging storytelling, and focusing on immersive experiences, you can attract your target audience and build a loyal brand following. Here are actionable tips and comprehensive advice to help you achieve your goals. Websites like Sourcemap provide visibility into supply chains, helping you trace the origins of your materials. -Reduce Waste: Design garments with minimal waste in mind, utilizing techniques like zero-waste pattern cutting or upcycling vintage fabrics. Organizations like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation offer insights into circular fashion principles and waste reduction strategies. Companies like Kornit Digital offer digital textile printing solutions suitable for small-scale production. Leverage Technology: - Utilize Digital Fashion and Virtual Sampling Leverage 3D design tools to create digital prototypes before physical production. Use virtual sampling to test designs and fit, reducing material waste and sample costs. Explore digital fashion opportunities, such as NFT-based clothing or virtual try-ons. Resources: CLO3D, Browzwear, DressX. -Implement AI for Design, Trend Forecasting, and Customer Engagement Use AI-driven design software to generate patterns and optimize collections. Leverage AI-powered trend forecasting tools to predict upcoming styles and consumer preferences. • Crafting Timeless Fashion with Purpose and Heart.

All Photography: Asher Rain Photography, MUA; Emily Claire Filice (@makeupbyemilyclaire). Hair by Veronica Greene. Creative Director, Dan Ostergren.  Behind the Scenes with Luza Rico. At Inside Fashion Design, we are always inspired by creators with a compelling mission, vision, and story—designers who pour their hearts into their work, crafting pieces that go beyond aesthetics to connect with something deeper. Luza Rico embodies this ethos perfectly, and her latest collection, Dive Deep, Walk on Water , is a testament to her passion for blending artistry with purpose. With every stitch, Luza invites us to explore our inner worlds and celebrate the divinity within ourselves, weaving intention, tradition, and innovation into garments that empower and uplift. Through her dedication to sustainability, cultural heritage, and inclusive design, she is redefining fashion as a force for connection and transformation. This is more than a collection; it’s an experience that touches the heart and inspires change. Luza's Dive Deep, Walk on Water Photo shoot “Dive Deep, Walk on Water” "This collection is very close to my heart because it was a process of “Diving Deep” within myself, to connect with who I am as a designer and “Walk on water” to come the surface and showcase my work.  This is why the collection was named “Dive Deep, Walk on Water”.  It is also an invitation for people to dive deep within themselves and connect with the Divinity that we all are.  Before creating any piece, I meditate and connect with my heart and set an intention. This allows me to have meditative work and to embed the pieces with the energy I intended to. Luza's Designs and Models at ifd's 2025 New Years Kick off at Hey Love, downtown Portland. Photos by Gillianne Fields " I always love seeing the reaction of my models when they first wear my garments, as the energy translates into a smile followed by words such as: I feel empowered, a Goddess, Fearless, Magnificent, Exquisite etc.  And this alone fills my heart with love and appreciation, knowing that for that at least that moment in time, a person’s heart was touched and therefore it’s better because of our interaction in the field of energy and the unknown". My work has been blooming and blooming and I honor every person, teacher, book, nature and the parts/collaborators that I have encountered and have been a source of support and inspiration. My work is a gift to myself and love to see how it has evolved to become a gift to others. I rise with all of you and for that I am grateful!!!!❤️". Luza Rico In 2025 Luza will be showing at least in one of the “big 4” Fashion Weeks (Internationally). So stayed tuned!!!🫶 Luza's Photoshoot of Dive Deep, Walk on Water Collection Behind the Scenes at FashioNXT with Luza Rico. Sustainability : Committing to eco-friendly practices that minimize waste and promote circular fashion through upcycling and high-quality materials. Innovation : Blending modern techniques with traditional methods to create avant-garde designs that push the boundaries of fashion. Cultural Heritage : Preserving and honoring ancestral craftsmanship, particularly from Colombian, Brazilian, and global artisan communities. Quality : Prioritizing the use of premium materials to ensure each garment is durable, timeless, and worthy of repurposing. Responsibility : Upholding fair trade and ethical production standards, showing care for the environment, people, and customers alike.   Luza's Sketches Luza's Applications: Full Fabric Utilization : Designs are crafted with the entire yardage in mind, sometimes using up to 6 yards of fabric, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. Scrap Repurposing : All fabric scraps, including threads, are saved. Reusable pieces are turned into fabric flowers, adding decorative elements to garments or accessories. Blanket Quilting for Homeless : Leftover scraps that cannot be used for garments are repurposed for quilts intended for the homeless community in Portland, OR. Local and Ethical Sourcing : Whenever possible, fabrics are sourced locally to reduce environmental impact and support local businesses. High-Quality Fabric Selection : Fabrics collected during travels are carefully chosen for their durability and quality, ensuring longevity and multiple uses for the garments. • How to Choose Your Word of the Year

Word of The Year Setting Intentions: What's Your Word for 2025? The new year is here, and with it comes the desire for a fresh start, a reset, and a vision for the months ahead. While traditional New Year's resolutions often set us with lofty goals and sometimes unrealistic expectations, there's a more straightforward, more focused approach: choosing one word to define your year.   A single word can act as a compass, guiding your decisions, priorities, and energy throughout the year. This word isn't just a goal or a resolution—it's a mindset, a focus, and a reminder of what matters most to you.   If you're ready to simplify your goal-setting process, here's a straightforward guide on How to Choose Your Word of the Year for 2025:   Reflect Reflect on the Past Year Before looking ahead, take a moment to reflect on 2024.   - What went well?   - What challenges did you face?   - What lessons did you learn?   - What do you wish you had more (or less) of?   These reflections often reveal patterns and themes that can inspire your word for the upcoming year.   Priorities Think About Your Priorities for 2025 Ask yourself:   - What do I want to focus on this year?   - What areas of my life need more attention or balance?   - How do I want to feel as I move through the year?   Your word should align with your values and aspirations, serving as a guidepost for where you want to direct your energy.   One Word Ideas Choose a Word That Resonates Your word can be anything that feels meaningful and powerful to you. Some examples include:   Growth: To expand your skills, knowledge, or opportunities.   Balance: You must balance work, personal life, and self-care.   Courage: If you want to take bold steps or face fears head-on.   Joy: If you aim to bring happiness and gratitude to your days.   Simplify: If life feels overwhelming and you seek clarity.   Write Your Word Make It Visible Once you've chosen your word, keep it front and center. Here are some ways to integrate it into your daily life:   - Write it in your planner or journal.   - Create a vision board featuring your words.   - Set it as your phone or desktop background.   - Use it as a mantra during meditation or quiet moments.   - Share it with friends or loved ones for added accountability and support.   Reflection Let It Evolve with You Your word is a living, breathing intention. As the year unfolds, allow your relationship with it to grow. You may find new ways it applies to different areas of your life or unexpected lessons it brings.   Empower My Word for 2025 My word this year is EMPOWER . Empower definition: make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights. When I google Empowerment, I stumbled upon this great article below from www.local.gov.uk : What do we mean by empowerment? Empowerment means people having power and control over their own lives. People get the support they need that is right for them. Empowerment means that people are equal citizens. They are respected and confident in their communities. You can’t empower someone else or make someone empowered. It is about ways of working and supporting someone that means they can take control and responsibility for their own lives. Some people might need more support than other people – but that doesn’t mean everyone can’t be empowered! Decisions made on behalf of people who lack capacity should be made in the person’s best interests and should involve the person as much as possible, and those who know them really well. When people are empowered the power is with the person and not the professionals or services. We know from the Transforming Care work that lots of people who end up in learning disability hospitals have no power or control over their own lives and what is happening to them. If we work with people in a different way that means they are empowered they will have better lives and this will stop some people from ending up in hospitals or in placements a long way from home. How will we know if people are empowered? Another beneficial step is to periodically, every few weeks or each quarter, assess your progress with the use of your word and adjust as necessary. Read more here: Words have Power What about you? Have you chosen your word for 2025? I'd love to hear what you've picked and why. Share your word on social media using #MyWordFor2025 and let's inspire each other.  Need some ideas? Google "one word" and several ideas will come up- and I find it helpful to also look up the defination and see how it feels to you. Set Your Intention Practical Steps to Implement Your Chosen Word into Your Daily Routine 1. Start Your Day with Intention    Begin each morning by reflecting on your word. Ask yourself how you can embody it in your actions that day. For example:      - If your word is "balance" , plan your day with time for work, rest, and play.      - If your word is "growth" , identify one small thing you can learn or improve.   2. Incorporate It into Small Habits      - Use your word as a theme for journaling or a gratitude list.      - If your word is "mindfulness" , incorporate deep breathing or meditation into your daily routine.   3. Visual Reminders      - Place sticky notes with your word on your mirror, desk, or fridge.      - Create a digital wallpaper with your word for your phone or computer.  4. Align Decisions with Your Word      When faced with choices, ask yourself:      - Does this align with my word?      - Will this decision bring me closer to the life I want to live this year?   5. Share It      Share your word with a friend, partner, or accountability group. They can remind you to stay true to your intention and celebrate your progress.   Journaling How to Track Your Progress and Stay Motivated 1. Create Monthly Check-Ins      At the start of each month, reflect on how your word influenced your actions, thoughts, or decisions in the previous month. Set mini-goals to help you align more closely with it.   2. Journal Regularly      Dedicate a few minutes weekly to write about how you lived your word. What worked? What didn't? What lessons did you learn?   3. Celebrate Small Wins      Acknowledge moments when you successfully embody your word. For example, if your word is " confidence," celebrate speaking up in a meeting or trying something new.   4. Find a Tracking System      - Use a habit tracker app or calendar to note when you take actions that are aligned with your word.      - Create a visual chart or graph to measure your consistency and progress.   5. Incorporate Reflection Prompts      Regularly ask yourself questions like:      - How did I live my word today?      - What challenges did I face?      - How can I embody my word tomorrow?   What to Do If Your Word No Longer Resonates   1. Reassess and Reflect      - Ask yourself why the word no longer feels right.      - Have your goals or priorities shifted?      - Are you misinterpreting how the word applies to your life?   2. Pivot or Evolve      - Adjust your word to better align with where you are now. For example, if "growth" feels too broad, you might refine it to "focus" to channel your energy more intentionally.      - Alternatively, choose a complementary word that enhances or builds on your original one.   3. Give Yourself Permission to Change      Remember, this process is about intention and growth. If your word no longer serves you, changing it is an act of self-awareness and adaptability, not failure.   4. Reintroduce the Word in a New Way      Explore how your word might apply to different areas of life. If it doesn't resonate professionally, it might still guide you personally.   By taking these steps, your word can remain a meaningful and adaptable tool to guide your year, no matter how your circumstances evolve. What is Your Word for 2025? Here's to a focused, intentional, and meaningful year ahead!
