- 6 Ways to Navigate Fashion Trends + 6 Free Trend Services
In today's rapidly evolving fashion landscape, the industry is witnessing a significant shift towards sustainability, with an emphasis on less consumption, reduced production, and minimal waste. As this paradigm continues to reshape the way we approach clothing, the question arises: What role do trends play in this new era, and how can designers and brands adapt to remain both relevant and environmentally conscious? Traditionally, trends have been the driving force behind fashion, dictating what's in and what's out each season. However, as consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of their clothing choices, the notion of constantly chasing trends is being reevaluated. Instead, there's a growing emphasis on timeless style, quality craftsmanship, and versatility – qualities that transcend fleeting trends and contribute to a more sustainable wardrobe. So, are trends still important? Yes, but perhaps not in the same way they once were. Rather than blindly following every fad that emerges, today's consumers are seeking authenticity, individuality, and sustainability in their fashion choices. This shift presents both challenges and opportunities for apparel brands and designers. One priority for brands is to reconsider their production processes and materials. Embracing sustainable practices such as using eco-friendly fabrics, implementing ethical manufacturing methods, and minimizing waste can not only reduce environmental harm but also resonate with consumers who prioritize sustainability. Moreover, instead of focusing solely on following trends, designers can channel their creativity into creating timeless pieces with a modern twist. By infusing classic designs with innovative details or incorporating elements inspired by current cultural and social movements, brands can maintain relevance without succumbing to the cycle of constant consumption. Additionally, rather than producing numerous collections each year, designers can adopt a more strategic approach by releasing smaller, curated collections that emphasize quality over quantity. This allows for greater attention to detail, craftsmanship, and storytelling, ultimately enhancing the brand's identity and appeal. Incorporating freshness into brands while remaining conscious of the environmental impact requires a thoughtful balance between creativity and sustainability. Designers can draw inspiration from nature, art, and diverse cultures to infuse their collections with unique perspectives and aesthetics. Experimenting with upcycled materials, innovative dyeing techniques, and modular designs can also inject novelty into their creations while minimizing waste. Furthermore, collaboration and innovation are key to driving positive change in the fashion industry. By partnering with sustainable initiatives, investing in research and development of eco-friendly materials, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, brands can lead the way towards a more sustainable future. Ultimately, staying "trendy" in today's fashion landscape is about more than just following the latest fads; it's about embracing sustainability, creativity, and conscious consumption. By prioritizing quality, authenticity, and environmental responsibility, brands and designers can redefine what it means to be fashionable in the 21st century. The Fifty Fathoms' timeless design has earned it a place as one of the most influential dive watches in history. Panerai Luminor Panerai, known for its precision and bold designs, originally launched the Luminor in the 1930s for the Italian Navy, providing divers with a durable and highly legible tool for underwater missions. - NYFW's Block the Noise showing Mantra Ray Sustainable Collection by Keli Studio
Hello Dear Reader! I am excited to share the work of Kelli Donovan, an Australia based designer, showing her latest collection at NYFW! There is still time to grab a ticket to attend! Visit here to learn more about this great show Block the Noise Kelli- Tell us about your latest collection you are showing at NYFW: The collection is inspired by the majestic giant manta rays and protecting the ocean which is their natural habitat from textile, pollution and plastic waste. Manta Rays have the largest brains of all fish species, they are gentle giants of the oceans and live on plankton. Their wing span can be up to 8 meters long. They do not harm any other species and are not dangerous to people. They filter the plankton through their huge mouths and their gills. Any plastic waste, textile waste or other chemical pollution in the ocean can be dangerous and extremely harmful to these gentle giants. The fashion industry is the second highest polluting industry in the world and it creates huge amounts of water pollution and toxic chemicals which are often just discarded into any water stream or the oceans without any filtering from industry. How do you incorporate sustainability into your work? I made the Manta Ray Collection - by Keli Studio - and accessories with reclaimed garments and accessories sourcing from products and textiles that are already here and not newly made - from my studio, our local op shop Vinnies, the Greenshed, reclaimed textiles from other designers studios, recycled sequins that are compostable, recycled discarded jewellery and bags and reclaimed Japanese obi textiles! Nothing is new and it’s all reclaimed, reused, recycled and remade using circular design concepts and techniques. Tell us about your collaborations: We are collaborating with lots of local small ethical and sustainable businesses including: Citizen Wolf - reclaimed dead stock organic tshirts - Sydney GoodCitizen - sunnies - each paid is made from one recycled plastic bottle - Sydney Circular Sourcing - reclaimed textiles from industry and designers - Melbourne Rojo Collective - printer and embroidery - Canberra St Mary Mackillop - a handful of excited textile students and their teacher - we have been getting together every week talking about sustainability and making pieces together from discarded denim jeans from the Greenshed for this collection to show in NY and at ECO Fashion Week Australia. James Lavercombe - mathematician and artist - Canberra Bianca Pritchard - textile helper with reassembling the cut denim - Canberra - Braidwood Tracy Lee Photography - Canberra Devjoka Models - Canberra Jade Camelleri - Model - Canberra The Natural Sequins company - Recycled sequins - UK Where can readers learn more? In the fast-paced world of fashion, Ronald van der Kemp (RVDK) stands out as a pioneer of sustainability and timeless elegance. In 2014, RVDK made history as the world's first sustainable couture label, challenging the norms of the fashion industry with its ethical and exquisitely beautiful creations. A New Paradigm in Fashion RVDK is not just a fashion label; it is a movement. Ronald van der Kemp, the creative force behind the brand, has a clear mission: to redefine luxury fashion by creating wardrobes that transcend seasons and trends. Each piece is a limited-edition statement, a rare treasure designed to be an enduring expression of a woman's personality, strength, and character. RVDK's dedication to sustainability is evident in every detail. Each RVDK garment is meticulously crafted from high-end existing materials and leftover fabrics, ensuring nothing is wasted. These pieces are brought to life by small ateliers and artisans in van der Kemp's native Holland, a testament to their skill and dedication. The Journey of Ronald van der Kemp Before launching his eponymous label, Ronald van der Kemp honed his craft over 25 years as a designer and creative director for some of the world's most prestigious luxury brands. His impressive resume includes stints at Bill Blass, Celine/Michael Kors, Guy Laroche, and Barneys. This rich experience has endowed van der Kemp with a deep understanding of high fashion, which he now channels into creating sustainable couture that rivals the glamour of traditional haute couture. Glamour with a Conscience RVDK aims to prove that ethical fashion can be as glamorous and exciting as its conventional counterparts. The brand infuses high fashion with nostalgia, evoking the golden days of haute couture while remaining firmly rooted in contemporary sustainability. Every piece is not just a garment but a work of art, crafted with an eye for detail and a deep respect for the planet. Fashion as Art The heart of RVDK's philosophy is the belief that fashion can be a powerful catalyst for change. Van der Kemp sees his creations as more than just clothing; they are a form of art that can inspire people to see the world differently. In a world inundated with disposable fashion, RVDK offers a refreshing perspective, encouraging us to appreciate the beauty in what we already have, and inspiring us to make a difference. "We are fashion alchemists," says van der Kemp. "We capture unused beautiful fragments and turn them into unique works of art. For the sake of beauty. For the sake of our planet." In Summary Ronald van der Kemp's RVDK is more than a brand; it is a manifesto for a more sustainable and thoughtful approach to fashion. By shunning wasteful practices and embracing the beauty of existing materials, RVDK shows us that it is possible to create ethical and breathtakingly beautiful luxury. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, RVDK is a shining example of how we can change our behavior and, in turn, the world. - Empowering the Next Generation of Fashion Designers: A Guide to Conscious Design Practices
Fashion isn’t just the clothes we wear, but a vital and enduring form of self-expression that can reflect our values and culture. However, the fashion industry is highly resource intensive, the fashion industry is highly resource-intensive, with fashion production comprising 10% of total global carbon emissions. Additionally, the “fast fashion” approach that much of the industry also facilitates various environmental and social inequalities, from excess waste to child labor. To meaningfully address these issues, emerging fashion designers need to be mindful of their impact and adopt more conscious design practices, including more sustainable and ethical production methods. The term conscious fashion refers to a growing design philosophy within the fashion industry, to create a system that allows designers to continually design and produce new fashion without negative impacts on the environment or society as a whole. In that way, conscious design aims to deliver on the triple bottom line: profit, people, and planet, whereas traditional business practices in the fashion world tend to prioritize the first above all else. Conscious design in fashion is ethical, sustainable, organic, animal-friendly, or vegan, and aims to mitigate the extensive environmental and social impacts of the modern fashion industry. One only needs to look at the many inequalities caused by the modern “fast fashion” system to recognize how negatively the industry can affect the environment. Recent data shows that 20% of global production waste comes from the textile and apparel sectors, and considering that many non-biodegradable fabrics can last upwards of 200 years, these discarded clothes will take up a lot of space in landfills. Also, not only is the fashion industry a major contributor to global emissions, but it also uses about 93 billion cubic meters of water annually, representing 4% of all global freshwater withdrawals. Modern fashion also has serious societal implications: there is ample evidence of forced and child labor in clothing supply chains around the world, a problem stemming from the need to produce large quantities of clothing quickly and cheaply. Another problem is a lack of traceability: due to the complexity and globalized nature of fashion industry supply chains, brands, and retailers often cannot see the full scope of their supply chain, making it difficult to identify specific points where human rights issues might occur. This is why there are mounting regulatory standards that aim to address the issue, with the Fair Trade Certification and the Global Organic Textile Standard all encouraging more ethical practices. Of course, making the transition to conscious design is no easy task, which is why we at Inside Fashion Design provide tools and resources to help designers transition smoothly. Our multimedia platform brings together a supportive community of fellow designers and top fashion industry professionals from around the world. The Conscious Fashion Design Academy training course teaches valuable strategies and insights to succeed sustainably and ethically in the industry, covering everything from integrating conscious design principles into your work to building circularity into your business model. Though it comes with its fair share of challenges, conscious design is the ideal solution if we want to address the serious environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry. We can reduce emissions and eliminate needless waste by embracing sustainability and circularity in our design approach. Meanwhile, implementing higher degrees of transparency into fashion supply chains and moving away from unsustainable speed and production practices can ensure that fashion production isn’t tainted by forced or child labor. So I’d encourage anyone in the fashion industry, from the experts to the up-and-comers, to learn more about conscious design practices and adopt them in their own work. - How to Build a Business with Body and Soul
Book of the Month: Body and Soul: Profits with Principles—The Amazing Success Story of Anita Roddick & The Body Shop "When The Body Shop International opened in 1976, on $8,000 in borrowed money, the phenomenal success of the business today would have appeared a pipe dream. Provocative, funny, and outrageous--Roddick tells her story, and expresses her unconventional views on hype, greed, caring and communion." (book review Amazom.com) When I first encountered this book in 1994, I was already working in the fashion industry. Back then, the concepts of sustainable and ethical fashion were not part of our vocabulary. Little did I know that Anita's philosophy would later become a guiding light in my career. As the years passed, the profound influence of this book on my journey became increasingly apparent, leading me to where I am today. Reading "Body and Soul" by Anita Roddick was a transformative experience for me. I kept the book on my reading table for years to keep her story fresh in my mind. Roddick's journey in establishing The Body Shop on ethical practices and social impact sparked a newfound level of inspiration and motivation. It fueled my passion for collaborating with ethical makers and advocating for businesses that bring positive change. Since then, Roddick's vision of integrating purpose into business operations has been a guiding force in my work, and today I am happy to look back on my journey in fashion and see how her story influenced my vision, passion, and career. I am able to do this today through Inside Fashion Design, where I am dedicated to promoting ethical fashion, cultivating a community that prioritizes sustainability and social good, and sharing my knowledge for creating fashion consciously. Book Overview: In Body and Soul, Anita Roddick shares her remarkable story of founding The Body Shop, a company known for its commitment to cruelty-free products, environmental sustainability, and fair trade. The book offers a blend of personal anecdotes and business insights, highlighting how ethical entrepreneurship can lead to success and meaningful impact. Key Points Ethical Business Practices: Roddick's unwavering dedication to moral standards, such as advocating for animal rights and supporting marginalized communities, is a central theme. Her approach demonstrates that businesses can thrive while staying true to their values and reassures the reader of the soundness of their ethical choices. Innovative Retail Strategies: The Body Shop's pioneering practices, like using recyclable packaging and promoting eco-friendly campaigns, showcased how aligning a brand with consumers' ethical values can create strong loyalty and success. Empowerment and Community: The book shares how The Body Shop empowered women as employees and through partnerships with women-led cooperatives, fostering a sense of community and purpose. This was not a common business practice at the time, The book highlights the importance of these initiatives and how she made the consumer feel connected and part of a more significant movement toward ethical business practices. Even though the book was written 30 years ago it is still a powerful reminder that businesses can be a force for good. I believe Roddick's story will continue to inspire those who believe in combining profit with purpose, making it a must-read for anyone interested in ethical entrepreneurship and social impact. - What Are Methods Fashion Designers Incorporate To Be More Sustainable?
Fashion designers today can be at the forefront of embracing sustainability and eco-conscious practices in their creative processes. In the quest to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry, designers are exploring a myriad of innovative and unconventional methods to craft new styles that not only look good but also promote a more sustainable future. So What Are Methods Fashion Designers Incorporate To Be More Sustainable? One of the key aspects of sustainable fashion design is the exploration of alternative materials and production techniques. Designers are moving away from traditional fabrics that have a high environmental impact, such as conventional cotton or synthetic fibers, and are instead turning to organic, recycled, or upcycled materials. By repurposing existing resources or using innovative materials like pineapple leaf fiber or recycled plastic bottles, designers are able to reduce waste and minimize their carbon footprint. One of the untraditional methods gaining popularity is upcycling, where designers repurpose discarded materials or clothing to create unique pieces. This approach not only reduces waste but also adds a distinctive touch to the final creations. Additionally, some designers are experimenting with natural dyes made from plant-based sources, moving away from harmful chemicals commonly used in traditional dyeing processes. Learn about Danit Peleg here: https://www.danitpeleg.com Furthermore, technology plays a significant role in revolutionizing the fashion industry. Designers are incorporating 3D printing techniques to produce intricate designs with minimal waste. Virtual fashion shows and digital clothing are also emerging trends, allowing designers to showcase their creations in a more sustainable and accessible manner. Collaborations with local artisans and communities are another unconventional method embraced by designers. By partnering with skilled craftsmen, designers not only preserve traditional techniques but also support local economies and promote cultural heritage through their collections. Check out our Community Conversation with Aparna Saxena of Torajamelo, a Community network making home and apparel goods This shift towards innovative and environmentally friendly processes in fashion design signifies a positive change in the industry.
