  • "Green Fashion: Sustainable Innovations in Materials and Practices"

Written by Contributing Author: Marqus Mushtaq As the fashion industry evolves, so does the imperative to embrace sustainable practices and materials. With climate change pressing ever harder, it's become evident that our choices in fashion design can significantly impact the environment. Luckily, recent years have ushered in a wave of eco-friendly innovations that uphold environmental responsibility and offer aesthetic appeal and economic viability, aligning perfectly with the ethos of the fashion world. This article shares the latest advancements in eco-conscious fashion, spotlighting the most notable sustainable materials and practices reshaping the industry's landscape. By embracing these innovations, fashion professionals can craft garments that make a statement on the runway and champion a more sustainable future for the generations to follow. Eco-Aware Consumers Driving Sustainable Fashion The rise of eco-conscious consumers has catalyzed a seismic shift in fashion preferences towards sustainability. Today's consumers actively seek products that reflect their commitment to reducing environmental impact. This demand has propelled fashion businesses to prioritize sustainable design and innovation. Companies integrate sustainability into their operations, from eco-friendly textiles to energy-efficient production methods. This shift benefits the environment and presents a golden opportunity for businesses to stand out in the market and appeal to a growing segment of environmentally conscious consumers. Reducing Waste with Upcycled Materials Reducing waste through upcycled materials stands as a cornerstone of eco-friendly fashion. Fashion designers can dramatically diminish their environmental footprint by repurposing materials in the production process. Incorporating upcycled materials such as reclaimed fabrics, recycled plastics, and repurposed textiles not only diverts waste from landfills but also curtails the demand for new resources, conserving energy and slashing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, upcycling promotes a circular economy, where resources are continuously reused and recycled, ushering in a new era of sustainable fashion. Learn more about Updcyled Fashion here Innovative Uses for Sustainable Fabrics Sustainable fabrics like bamboo are revolutionizing the fashion landscape with their versatility and eco-friendly properties. Bamboo fabric, prized for its softness and breathability, has found applications across various segments of the fashion industry. From activewear to outdoor clothing, bamboo fabric offers unparalleled comfort, moisture-wicking capabilities, and natural UV protection. Its antimicrobial properties also make it ideal for garments requiring frequent washing. With bamboo fabric leading the charge, sustainable textiles are transforming how we dress and fostering ethical and sustainable fashion practices. Sustainability in Fashion Manufacturing Manufacturers are increasingly adopting sustainable practices to minimize their environmental impact. From energy-efficient production processes to renewable energy sources, fashion manufacturers are spearheading a green revolution. By embracing sustainable manufacturing practices, companies can mitigate resource consumption, reduce waste generation, and lower their carbon footprint. Moreover, integrating sustainable practices into fashion manufacturing resonates with environmentally conscious consumers, reinforces a positive brand image, and sets new standards for responsible production. Green Packaging Alternatives In response to the growing demand for sustainability, fashion brands are rethinking their approach to packaging. Biodegradable materials, minimalist designs, and reusable containers are emerging as viable alternatives to traditional packaging. By leveraging eco-friendly packaging solutions, fashion companies can minimize their environmental impact and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. From plant-based plastics to compostable packaging, these alternatives offer a path toward a greener and more sustainable future for fashion. Harnessing Renewable Energy The fashion industry is increasingly using renewable energy sources to power its operations. Solar power, wind energy, and hydropower are among the most popular alternatives to fossil fuels. By tapping into renewable energy sources, fashion companies can slash their carbon emissions and pave the way for a cleaner, greener future. Beyond environmental benefits, investing in renewable energy also offers long-term financial savings, making it a win-win for businesses and the planet. Embracing Biodegradable Materials The rise of biodegradable materials heralds a new era of sustainable fashion. Derived from natural sources, biodegradable materials break into non-toxic components over time, minimizing their environmental impact. From biodegradable packaging to compostable textiles, these materials offer a sustainable alternative to traditional counterparts without compromising quality or functionality. As consumer demand for eco-friendly products continues to soar, biodegradable materials are poised to reshape the fashion industry for the better. Designing for Sustainability Designing for longevity and durability is paramount in a sustainable fashion. By creating products built to last, fashion designers can reduce waste and promote a more sustainable consumption pattern. High-quality materials, robust construction techniques, and repairable designs are crucial to extending the lifespan of garments and minimizing environmental impact. By prioritizing durability and longevity, fashion professionals can pioneer a shift towards a more sustainable and responsible approach to fashion consumption. Partnering with Ethical Suppliers Collaborating with ethical suppliers is essential for fostering sustainable fashion practices. By selecting suppliers prioritizing sustainability and ethical business practices, fashion brands can ensure their materials are responsibly sourced and produced. This commitment to ethical sourcing reduces the industry's ecological footprint and promotes social responsibility and transparency throughout the supply chain. Through ethical partnerships, fashion companies can lead by example and set new industry sustainability benchmarks. In conclusion, sustainable fashion is not just a trend; it's a commitment to a brighter, greener future. With innovations in materials and practices, the fashion industry has the power to revolutionize how we dress and live. By embracing eco-friendly principles and pioneering sustainable solutions, fashion professionals can create a more beautiful, ethical, and sustainable world for future generations. • How to Become a Fashion Upcycler! Lessons from Top Designers

Embracing the Joy of Upcycling in Fashion Upcycling — the art of transforming old materials into new treasures — continues to shine brightly in the world of fashion in 2023-2024! From Viktor & Rolf's stunning creations with fabric swatches to Ronald van der Kemp's innovative designs with deadstock fabrics, the industry is buzzing with creativity. John Galliano's groundbreaking work for Maison Margiela's Autumn/Winter 2020 collection remains a testament to the magic of upcycling. By thrift shopping and reimagining garments, Galliano showed us that true artistry lies in making the most of what we have. Let's celebrate this ongoing wave of sustainable fashion, where every piece tells a unique story and breathes new life into forgotten materials. Together, we can continue to redefine luxury and say goodbye to the wasteful habits of fast fashion! Read on to learn How to Become a Fashion Upcycler! Lessons from Top Designers As laborers, activists, and industry leaders continue to highlight the significant waste issues within the fashion industry, we anticipate an increasing number of designers will feel compelled to work with existing materials. Thrifted garments, rescued materials, deadstock marketplaces, and emerging platforms repurposing clothing that would otherwise be discarded — all of these are set to play a vital role in creating the type of brand experience that eco-conscious consumers are seeking. There are already indications of upcycling in fast fashion, such as Asos’ Reclaimed Vintage line. The exclusivity of a garment crafted from a limited batch of deadstock fabric or unique found objects perfectly complements the luxury experience. With that in mind, here are five brands that are leading the charge on upcycled fashion. They’ve got style packed with substance and they’re working to make the world a better place! RÆBURN Designer Christopher Raeburn established his eponymous brand in 2009 using decommissioned military stock to create limited-edition outerwear. Garments now might be made of GOTS-certified cottons, recycled polyester made from recycled PET plastic bottles, or repurposed materials sourced from vintage markets and military warehouses. RÆBURN even makes several pieces to order, to help reduce waste and overproduction. BOTTLETOP Luxury sustainable fashion brand BOTTLETOP takes metal ring pulls — the ones that open soda cans — and turns them into handbags and accessories made in their signature chainmail. A portion of the profits go to grassroots health, education, and skills training projects through their foundation. RE/DONE Re/Done deconstructs vintage denim and transforms it into new jeans. Additionally, their RE/SELL program assists in finding a new owner for your purchase. Reformation Reformation is a renowned sustainable brand known for its upcycling practices. They create their products using low-impact materials, deadstock fabrics, and repurposed vintage clothing. With a commitment to transparency, Reformation ensures accountability in their supply chain by answering the question "Who made our clothes" at every level and upholding fair labor practices. The brand releases fresh, limited collections weekly, initially in small quantities and scaling up based on demand. DEUX MAINS "Deux Mains was created in a time of disaster, yet thrives in its wake. When a catastrophic earthquake decimated Haiti in 2010, Deux Mains founder and creative director Julie Colombino-Billingham experienced a country at its worst. Witnessing the desperate need for dignified employment in Haiti became the catalyst and greatest inspiration behind the brand. Now, with each collection, we honor the ancestral wisdom, talent, and perseverance Julie found in the people of Haiti." From DeusMains.com Want more inspiration? • How to define your Personal Style Statement & Be More Sustainable

Our Book of the Month: Style Statement by Carrie McCarthy & Danielle LaPorte Hey there! So, as a Fashion Designer, you'd expect me to have a solid sense of my personal style, right? But hey, that's not always the case! Back in the day, I used to get swayed by trends, feeling like I had to follow what was in fashion, even if it wasn't really "me." I guess I was a bit lost when it came to defining my true style... I knew what I liked and what I felt good wearing, but couldn't quite pinpoint my signature look and I often spent too much money on things I didn't necessary love. If you're up for finding out something cool about yourself and nailing down your personal style, you gotta grab a copy of this month's top pick: "Style Statement" by Carrie McCarthy and Danielle LaPorte. I stumbled upon this awesome book a few years back and was totally hooked! I brought it along on vacation, started reading it on the plane, and couldn't put it down. It became my go-to read by the pool, doing the exercises with my morning coffee. By the end of the trip, I had some deep insights about myself, crafted my own style statement, and felt super pumped about having a renewed sense of direction. Not only will you unearth a fresh perspective on yourself, but having your own style statement will also help you be more mindful when making any purchase decisions. By reading this book, I uncovered my 80/20 words, identified my personal style statement rooted in my values, so I could incorporate them into not only my wardrobe but also my daily life. This newfound perspective now guides my decision-making process with confidence. The book does this by asking thought-provoking questions about your passions, inspirations, likes, and dislikes. By working through the exercises and questions, you'll uncover two words that perfectly capture who you are. The first word represents your core identity, making up 80% of you, while the second word showcases your unique creative side - the 20% that makes you stand out and drives you forward. Eager to know my words? Keep reading to find out! Discovering your own personal style can be super helpful when it comes to shopping and being more mindful about what you buy. This book is all about helping you figure out your unique style through fun questions and quizzes. Once you know what you really like, you can choose clothes that you'll love and wear for a long time, instead of buying things on a whim. This way, you'll have a wardrobe that really reflects who you are and you'll also be doing your part to help the environment by reducing waste and shopping more consciously. So how does this book guide you to discover your own style statement? Engaging Exercises: This book encourages interaction by presenting you with a series of questions and exercises designed to reveal your fundamental values and genuine preferences. If you enjoy writing, self-reflection, and engaging in enjoyable introspection, then this book is perfect for you! Holistic Understanding of Style: McCarthy and LaPorte redefine style beyond clothing and aesthetics. They explore how personal style is intertwined with lifestyle, environment, and inner values. This broad perspective helps you understand that true style is an expression of your entire being. Find Your Personality Style: Get ready to express yourself by creating your own two-word style tagline. Take on this adventure of discovery to understand your unique likes and dislikes. Your style statement will be your lifestyle roadmap, helping you make bold and genuine style decisions that truly represent who you are. Empowering Decision-Making Framework: Transform your style statement into a powerful tool for curating your wardrobe. Make confident choices that align with your values and personal style. Wave goodbye to impulse buys and welcome a more cohesive wardrobe. Embrace Your Uniqueness and Boost Your Confidence: By discovering your personal style and you will have a fresh wave of confidence in your choices. This inspiring book will empower you to celebrate your individuality and make decisions that truly reflect who you are. Get ready to radiate self-assurance and empowerment, transforming not just your fashion sense but every aspect of your life! Sustainable and Ethical Considerations: Embracing your unique "Style Statement" goes beyond just fashion; it's a journey towards mindful consumption. By focusing on your personal values and choosing quality pieces, you're not only creating a wardrobe that truly expresses who you are, but also making sustainable and ethical choices. This holistic approach to decision making is a great way to show love for the environment and support positive change in the fashion industry! What I also really love about this book is its foundation words. The ideal foundation words are applied to the spirit, look, and feel of something. They work for both the material and the immaterial. The authors list the most common foundation words within people's style statements; they represent essential fundamental truths for many people. Although you may find more than one or two words that appeal to you, the authors help you narrow it down to find the most meaningful. If you're wondering about my style statement, let me tell you that I've gone through this process twice - once when I first read the book years ago, and a second time 10 years later. The reason for updating my style statement the second time around? Well, it's simple. We evolve, our experiences, lifestyle, career, and bodies change! Therefore, it's perfectly fine to make changes - as we journey through life, our preferences develop and we must adapt accordingly. So, my current style statement is...drumroll please...... "Cultivated Elegance" And what exactly doesnt that mean? According to the authors description, this is totally me! Initially, I was drawn to 3 to 4 foundation words that resonated with me. However, through exercises, careful re-reading, and dedicated reflection, I eventually discovered the word that truly spoke to my essence. My foundation word (80%) is cultivated/cultivating. The spirit of cultivating means "taking tremendous pleasure in seeing things grow. People who describe themselves as cultivating love to nurture their inner life, other people, animals, nature, and ultimately, good ideas. Happy to foster and promote the growth of others. Cultivated works toward what is best for the individual and the group. They are attractive to others precisely because they are actively and sincerely interested in the world around them. They respect, honor, and celebrate the customs of various communities and traditions in constant connections with people; they are natural leaders. Positively passionate about growing learning and teaching cultivated is often well trained or educated, either formally or self-taught, and thus can sometimes be quite self-critical, overextending for accomplishments. They always have some pursuit of exploration underway. Cultivated considered all of life’s experiences, positive and negative nutrients for the inner garden from which they reap their harvest. The look and feel cultivated? Always quality with a high degree of taste. Can run the gambit from sophisticated and refined to culturally, diverse, eccentric, or bohemian. Rich artistic intellectually advanced full range of textures, taste, and aromas" From Style Statement: Live By Your Own Design. They always have some pursuit of exploration underway. Cultivated cons considered all of life’s experiences, positive and negative nutrients for the kindergarten from which they reap their harvest. The look and feel cultivated? Always quality with a high degree of taste. Can run the gambit from sophisticated and refined to culturally, diverse, eccentric, or bohemian. Rich artistic intellectually advanced full range of textures, taste, and aromas No surprise then that my Word of The Year 2023 was GROW! My second word (20%) is elegant/elegant/elegantly. "The spirit of this is poised, gracious, respectful presentation matters to them. Elegant cares how it all comes together, outfits, business plans, and celebrations. The truly elegant are matters of restraint and humble, respectful, elegant prize solutions, and are driven to find the optimal way of achieving a goal, usually through a simple and precise method. Look and feel elegant moves with Grace's uncomplicated, sleek, refined, mature attention to detail, great posture, gentle, poised, composed, and graceful, put together, refreshed. • The True Cost Of Fast Fashion And How To Combat It

Greetings, Dear Conscious Caring Reader! Since you are joining us today, we applaud you as we know you care and want to learn how you can join in the efforts to make a positive impact. So thank you for joining us on an adventure as we explore the true expense of fast fashion, look into the intriguing psychology behind our shopping behaviors, and provide actionable advice for initiating constructive transformations. Read on to expand your knowledge and discover useful tools that will enable you to enact change. Remember, in the fashion industry, there is always hope and opportunity for a positive impact. Just like the butterfly effect, every small action taken by individuals and communities can create a ripple effect that spreads far and wide, bringing about meaningful change and a brighter future for all. In a world of fast fashion and fleeting trends, it's easy to get swept up in the allure of inexpensive clothing. After all, who doesn't love snagging a bargain? But what if the actual cost of those cheap garments goes far beyond the number on the price tag? In this blog post, we'll explore the hidden costs of cheap fashion, the psychology behind our purchasing decisions, and discuss ways consumers can make positive changes to reduce waste and excess in their clothing purchases. The Hidden Costs When contemplating the price of a garment, we typically focus solely on the amount we hand over at the register. Nevertheless, the true cost of that piece of clothing goes well beyond the figure displayed on the receipt. Take into account the various impacts your purchase could have: Environmental Impact: The production of inexpensive fashion items frequently comes with a high environmental price tag. The mass manufacturing of clothing leads to pollution, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, the utilization of low-cost materials and dyes can have detrimental effects on ecosystems and water bodies. Worker Exploitation: To achieve cost savings, numerous fast fashion companies exploit cheap labor in developing nations. Employees at these facilities frequently face extended work hours, hazardous environments, and unjustly low pay. Culture of Disposability: The affordability of fast fashion promotes a culture where clothes are considered disposable items rather than cherished belongings. Consequently, this mindset results in overconsumption and adds to the alarming volume of textile waste generated annually. The Psychology of Purchasing There are numerous psychological factors that impact our purchasing choices, with fast fashion brands often taking advantage of them to promote impulse buying and repeat purchases. Various psychological factors can elucidate why individuals may purchase beyond their actual needs. Below are some key psychological motivators: *Social Comparison: Humans naturally tend to compare themselves to others, which extends to material possessions like clothing. Seeing others with new or trendy items can create a desire to keep up, leading individuals to buy more than they need to fit in or maintain a certain social status. *Emotional Shopping: Engaging in shopping can serve as a coping mechanism for individuals dealing with negative emotions like stress, anxiety, or boredom. Retail therapy offers a momentary uplift in mood, and acquiring a new item can evoke feelings of excitement and satisfaction. *Instant Gratification: We're accustomed to instant gratification in today's fast-paced society. Buying something new provides immediate satisfaction, whereas delaying gratification by waiting to purchase can feel less rewarding. This desire for instant gratification can lead people to buy more than they need without fully considering the consequences. *Marketing and Advertising: The fashion industry spends billions of dollars on marketing and advertising each year to create desire and drive consumption. Clever advertising campaigns, sales promotions, and limited-time offers can create a sense of urgency and FOMO (fear of missing out), prompting individuals to buy more than they need. *Biased Decision-Making: People are susceptible to various cognitive biases that can influence their purchasing decisions. For example, the anchoring effect can cause individuals to rely too heavily on the first piece of information they receive (such as a discounted price), leading them to overlook other factors like quality or necessity. *Lack of Self-Control: Some individuals may need help with self-control when shopping, especially in environments that encourage impulse buying, such as fast fashion retailers or online shopping platforms. Without a clear plan or budget, succumbing to temptation and buying more than is necessary is easy. *FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): The fear of missing out drives many purchasing decisions, especially regarding limited-time sales and exclusive collections. Fast fashion brands create a sense of urgency around their products, making consumers feel they need to buy now or risk missing out on a great deal. Dealing with the emotions behind overspending can be tough, but it's also super rewarding! To start shopping more mindfully, the key is to understand what makes you splurge in the first place. By tuning into your feelings and habits, you can uncover the reasons driving those impulse buys. Once you've got a handle on your triggers, you can start exploring better ways to deal with them. Think mindfulness exercises or finding joy in activities that don't involve hitting the shops! Postitive Action Plan: Practice Gratitude: Appreciating and being happy with what you already have can bring a sense of fulfillment that doesn't depend on buying more stuff. Instead of always wanting more, shifting focus to valuing what you already own can reduce the urge to shop for happiness. Choosing a simpler lifestyle or engaging in activities that boost personal growth and well-being can help you rethink your values and choices, leading to a more mindful and satisfying approach to consuming. Practice Mindfulness: Before making a purchase, take a moment to pause and assess your motivations. Are you buying out of necessity or emotion? Mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, allowing you to make more conscious decisions. Website: Mindful Resource: Headspace Set Intentions: Before entering a store or browsing online, set clear intentions for your shopping trip. Ask yourself what you truly need and why you're making the purchase. Setting specific goals can help you stay focused and avoid impulse buying. Article: How to Set Intentions and Stick to Them Website: Tiny Buddha Create a Budget: Establish and stick to a budget for clothing purchases. Knowing your financial limits can help prevent overspending and impulse buying. Consider allocating a certain amount of money each month for clothing and be mindful of staying within that budget. Setting some money goals and creating a budget can really help you figure out what you truly need and what you just want. When you have a clear plan for your finances, it's easier to avoid spending without thinking and make smart choices when you buy stuff. And don't forget, talking to friends, family, or a therapist can give you some great tips and support as you change how you think about shopping. Resource: Dave Ramsey - Budgeting Tool: Mint - Personal Finance & Money Practice Delayed Gratification: When you feel the urge to make an impulse purchase, try practicing delayed gratification. Wait 24 hours before making the purchase to give yourself time to reflect on whether it's essential. The desire to buy diminishes over time. Article: The Marshmallow Test: What Does It Really Measure? Resource: Psychology Today - Understanding Delayed Gratification Shop with Purpose: Instead of browsing aimlessly, shop with a purpose. Make a list of specific items you need or want to add to your wardrobe and stick to it. Focus only on what you came to buy to avoid distractions and temptations. Article: 18 Ways to Shop with Intention Resource: How to shop more intentionally Consider the True Cost: Before purchasing, consider the item's actual cost beyond its price tag. Consider the garment's environmental and social impact, as well as its long-term value and durability. Is it something you'll wear frequently and cherish for years, or will it likely end up forgotten in your closet? Documentary: The True Cost of Fashion (see video link below) Website: Good On You: Guide to Sustainable fashion. Embrace Minimalism: Adopting a minimalist mindset can help shift your focus from material possessions to experiences and relationships. Declutter your wardrobe regularly and prioritize quality over quantity. Invest in timeless pieces that bring you joy and align with your style. Resource: The Minimalists - Resources Book: "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo Upgrade your purchasing decisions with these effective techniques! By integrating them, you can adopt a more conscious and intentional approach to making purchases. This will help minimize waste, avoid unnecessary purchases, and promote sustainability and ethical consumption. Exciting, right? Making Positive Changes While the allure of cheap fashion may be hard to resist, here are additional steps we can take to make more sustainable and ethical clothing choices. 1. Educate Yourself: Learn about the fashion industry's environmental and social impact. By understanding the actual cost of cheap fashion, you can make more informed purchasing decisions. 2. Invest in Quality: Instead of buying cheap, disposable clothing, invest in high-quality pieces built to last. Look for brands that prioritize sustainability, transparency, and ethical labor practices. 3. Embrace Minimalism: Adopting a minimalist approach to fashion can help reduce waste and excess. Focus on building a versatile wardrobe of timeless pieces you truly love and will wear for years. 4. Support Sustainable Brands: Seek brands committed to sustainability and ethical production. Look for certifications such as Fair Trade and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) to ensure your clothing is made with respect for people and the planet. 5. Extend the Life of Your Clothing: Protect your garments by washing them properly, repairing any damage, and donating or recycling items you no longer wear. By extending the life of your clothing, you can reduce your environmental footprint and minimize waste. Embrace the opportunity to make thoughtful choices when it comes to fashion! While the allure of affordable clothing is undeniable, let's also celebrate the chance to prioritize sustainability and ethics in our wardrobe decisions. By acknowledging the positive impact of mindful fashion choices on the environment and society, we can contribute to a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry. Remember, the most stylish wardrobe is one that aligns with your values and respects our planet. • Innovative and Eco-Friendly Fashion Design for Memorial Day

Dear Fashion Innovators, As we observe Memorial Day, a unique opportunity presents itself to honor the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of the men and women who have served our country. This day of remembrance inspires us to reflect on these values and find meaningful ways to incorporate them into our work. In the spirit of gratitude and sustainability, let's explore how we can pay homage to our heroes through innovative and eco-friendly fashion design, a privilege we have as fashion professionals. Sustainable Tribute Through Design Fashion has always been a powerful medium for storytelling. For Memorial Day, let's use our creativity to design pieces that honor the spirit of our heroes and promote sustainability. Consider the freedom of utilizing vintage garments and materials that can be upcycled or recycled. By giving new life to old pieces, we can create environmentally friendly designs deeply symbolic of resilience and renewal, a truly exciting prospect. Drawing Inspiration from Military Fashion The influence of military fashion on civilian clothing is profound. Iconic pieces such as trench coats, bomber jackets, and cargo pants have roots in military history. These garments, designed for durability and functionality, provide an excellent foundation for sustainable fashion. We can create unique pieces that honor the past while embracing the future by sourcing vintage military apparel and reimagining them with a contemporary twist. Sustainable Practices for Memorial Day In addition to design inspiration, Memorial Day is an opportunity to reflect on our practices and values as fashion professionals. Embracing sustainability benefits the environment by reducing waste and carbon footprint. It also adds depth and meaning to our work, as we are not just creating beautiful designs, but also contributing to a more sustainable future. Upcycling: Transform vintage military uniforms into modern, wearable art. This could involve altering the shape, adding embellishments, or combining with other materials to create a unique piece. The key is to add your unique touch while preserving the integrity and history of the original garments. Recycling: Use recycled materials and fabrics to create new pieces. This not only reduces waste but also highlights the importance of sustainability in fashion, a responsibility we all share and a difference we can all make. Conscious Collections: Create a Memorial Day collection that raises awareness about the importance of sustainable fashion. Dedicate a portion of your sales to veterans' organizations, promoting environmental and social responsibility. (Adapted from Fellowshiphall.com) 1. Share your story Experiencing mental illness can lead to feelings of isolation. If you feel secure and at ease, consider sharing your story on social media or with online communities you participate in. Your narrative is significant — by sharing your journey, you may help someone feel acknowledged, listened to, and understood in the broader world! 2. Deal with emotions like anger and sadness through these helpful exercises. Illustrate Your Calm: Whether you have a passion for drawing and doodling or seek a method to relax, enhance creativity, and rediscover your priorities, this engaging manual will introduce you to the calming practice of slow drawing. If you dont consider yourself someone who can draw, here's a little secret Amy Maricle from Mindfulartstudio.com # 1: EVERYONE CAN DRAW "Engaging in art as a form of self-care over the years has provided me with valuable insights into myself, my emotions, and my experiences. One key lesson I've learned is that the concept of "art" is more fluid than commonly believed. Many individuals often claim, "I lack drawing skills." However, I have discovered that they possess this ability, albeit to varying degrees. While not everyone can replicate DaVinci's masterpieces, based on my interactions with students, most individuals can draw much better than they realize, particularly when they broaden their definition of what constitutes a drawing or a "good drawing." ARTISTIC SECRET # 2: DRAWING CAN BE CALMING Being non-judgmental and broadening your perspective on what constitutes a "good drawing" can make drawing a highly soothing activity, particularly for individuals prone to feeling tense or anxious. (Ahem. Who? Me?) So how about it? Would you be willing to try some very simple art exercises and see whether or not they have a positive impact on your mood? As long as you can hold a pen, you can do it right. ARTISTIC SECRET # 3: YOUR INNER CRITIC IS JUST SCARED In case you believe that your inner critic could hinder you from approaching this with an open mind, consider starting with the inner critic exercise from the Starting Your Art Journal e-book. At times, we all require assistance in pushing our fears aside before courageously attempting something new. Now, give it a go!! Engage in some art exercises for relaxation! 3. • How To Increase Your Apparel Intelligence Quotient

Cracking the Code:  So what is AIQ and how do you raise your Apparel Intelligence Quotient? Hey there, Conscious Fashion Friends! Let's talk about something cool you may have not heard of: Apparel Intelligence Quotient, or as we like to call it, AIQ. It's your superpower in the world of apparel and textiles – how much you know and how well you understand how to apply it in the fashion industry. But don''t fret, there's no test required for this one. It's all about your experiences, what you've learned, and how you're implementing to make a positive impact in the industry. Think of AIQ as flexing your brain muscles in three significant ways: First, Its about Learning the Ropes AIQ isn't just about hitting the books; it's about soaking up knowledge from everywhere – whether you're in a classroom, on the job, or just chatting with fellow caring fashion enthusiasts. It's about absorbing as much as you, even if it's an area not directly within your scope of work. Second: Spotting and Solving Fashion Dilemmas Do you have an eye for spotting challenges and problems? Awesome! AIQ means pointing them out and coming up with practical and applicable solutions, whether it's fixing production hiccups or predicting the next big technology. Exploring different methods and speaking up to share your insights can go a long way. Third: Learn to be a Fashion Ninja Being competent in the fashion world isn't just about knowing your stuff; it's also about being quick on your feet and ninja-like in handling new situations. From understanding new methods to juggling the nitty-gritty of the fashion biz, it's all about being sharp and savvy. Having the ability to pivot quickly and without resistance will provide support for the team as things adjust. Now, let's break it down into some specific areas where you can increase your AIQ: Textiles & Mills: From yarn construction to fabric technology , AIQ means knowing your way around textiles & materials. Learn from online courses on textile production or visit local textile factories and ask a ton of questions for firsthand experience. Websites like Common Objective (Commonobjective.co) offer a wealth of information on textile production processes, machinery, and materials. We like this "Quick Guide to Different Types of Textile Fibres" from Common Objective. Online courses on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or LinkedIn Learning also provide in-depth knowledge on textile manufacturing. Design & Product Development: Ever dreamed of creating the next big thing? AIQ is all about understanding how you turn those dreams into reality, whether it's sketching out designs or nailing the technical stuff. It's important to know how to commercialize a design and the development process it goes through to get it into production. Learn not only about setting up a good efficient design, but how to best manufacture it for maximum efficiencies and lowering its impact on the planet. Try out design software like Adobe Illustrator for creating technical sketches for presentations, tech packs and design detail sheets. Gain a full understanding of the development process, which will make you a more efficient designer. Enroll in design workshops to hone your skills in these areas. Websites such as Skillshare and Domestika offer a wide range of online courses taught by industry professionals on fashion design, pattern making, and product development. Additionally, platforms like Fashionary  provide tools and resources for fashion designers. Merchandising & Retail: Want to be the boss on the planning or retail side of things? AIQ in retail means knowing the ins and outs of supply chains, whether you're slaying in-store or working in the online space. Take online courses on retail management or intern at your favorite boutique to learn the ropes. Online platforms like Retail Dive and NRF (National Retail Federation) offer articles, reports, and insights into retail trends, strategies, and best practices. Retail-focused courses on platforms like Udemy and Coursera can also provide valuable knowledge on merchandising and retail management. Manufacturing: Quality control? Check. Sustainability superhero? Double-check. AIQ in manufacturing means making sure everything from threads to seams is top-notch. Attend seminars on sustainable manufacturing practices or volunteer at a garment factory to understand production processes. Nothing beats being on the factory floor to gain a full understanding. Websites like Sustainable Apparel Coalition (sustainableapparelcoalition.org) and Fashion Revolution (fashionrevolution.org) offer resources and guides on sustainable manufacturing practices in the fashion industry. Additionally, platforms like FutureLearn and edX offer courses on sustainable fashion and manufacturing processes. Sales & Marketing: Got the gift of the gab? AIQ in sales and marketing is all about building relationships with customers through your charm and smarts, whether you're selling fabrics or the latest must-have artisan accessory. Practice your sales pitch with friends or delve into online marketing courses to sharpen your skills. Websites like HubSpot Academy and Google Digital Garage offer free online courses on sales, marketing, and digital advertising. Platforms like Coursera and Udemy also offer courses specifically tailored to fashion marketing and branding.
