Learning About Switch ROM Preservation

I've been researching how modern video games can be preserved for the future, and Nintendo Switch has raised some interesting questions for me. People often use the word ROM as though every file is identical, but then I see references to NSP, XCI, updates and other types of data. It makes me wonder how preservation specialists actually organise all of this information. I understand that copyrighted software shouldn't simply be shared without permission, so I'm interested in the technical side: what are the main formats people encounter when studying Switch software and emulation?

The word ROM is often used as a convenient general term, but technically there are different types of images and software packages. When researching Switch preservation, you'll commonly encounter XCI for cartridge-related content and NSP for installable packages. You may also come across searches for switch roms download although that phrase is often used very broadly online and doesn't necessarily tell you anything about the technical characteristics or legal status of a file. For preservation work, it's better to understand the original source, software version, metadata and associated updates. Using legally created backups of software you own also keeps the research focused on preservation and emulation rather than unauthorised distribution.
