That’s why we’re committed to providing opportunities for others to be educated, whether through our research, our partnerships, or our outreach initiatives. We believe that education is a powerful tool that can help people achieve their full potential and make a positive impact on the world. 5. Kindness Kindness is a core value that is important to us at IFD. We believe that kindness is a universal language that can transcend boundaries and bring people together. We strive to be kind to ourselves, to our colleagues, and to the world around us. We understand that kindness is more than just being nice – it’s about compassion, empathy, and understanding. By practicing kindness, we can create a world that is more caring, supportive, and connected. In conclusion, our five core values of advocacy, inspiration, community building, kindness, and education guide our actions and shape our culture at Inside Fashion Design. We believe that by upholding these values, we can create a world that is more just, more compassionate, and more connected. • Looking at the Past, Present, and Future to Reach Our Big Purpose

Dear Reader; A BIG THANK YOU to you! Because of you, we're celebrating our 6th anniversary! I still remember sitting in Jackson Heights, NY, in 2011, scratching out some thoughts about launching a site. Initially, I came up with the name "All Things Design," but I only managed to create one "Hello World" post before setting aside the idea. Six years later, this vision became a reality when Inside Fashion Design was launched in 2017, allowing me to combine my love for designing, mentoring, and sharing stories that inspire and spread goodness. Appreciations of the Past 6 years Over the past six years, IFD has grown from a simple blog site to a much grander platform, organically evolving into an educational and resource site, while simultaneously creating a community. We connected with wonderfully talented people in the industry, and hosted hands-on workshops in our studio and more significant events for Design Week Portland and Portland Textile Month, leading up to our dreams for an Annual Ethical Fashion Festival. We've hosted teams from Nike, European designers, and students from the University of Oregon, Portland State University, and Oregon State. We've participated in the NW Materials Show, been backstage at FashioNXT and NYFW, and moderated for Zoom events such as the Digital Materials Show, Textile Month, and Fashion Mingle. We've conducted live interviews with designers, career coaches, and those striving for more ethical and sustainable fashion. We’ve built relationships with Fashion Revolution, Global Fashion Marketplace, Ethical Fashion Initiative, and International Women’s Day to name a few, and most recently, have partnered with the World Collective One of our biggest highlights was an event we hosted during the pandemic. What would have been our 1-night 2020 Design Week Portland event turned into a global virtual 3-day event called the Ethical Fashion Festival, which was so rewarding that we officially became a Non-Profit event this year. We are partnering with World Collective and are very excited about what this has the potential to become. This is all wonderful and I am so grateful, but as with all businesses, comes with many challenges. Many lessons have been learned along the way, and we'll continue to learn as we go. There have been many stressful moments, trying to meet significant deadlines, heartbreak from loss of money, and loss of articles with website crashes. We have been through 4-5 website designers—some leaving us hanging, some charging us for an unheard-of amount of time and fees. We have hosted events where no one showed up, been interviewed for magazines that never got published, reached out to dozens of businesses in hopes of getting sponsors for our events, and put in hours and hours talking to people about ideas and ways to expand our community—all with the vision to offer value and opportunities helpful to our readers. As we know, anything worthwhile takes effort, and pursuing your dreams isn't necessarily easy. However, the reward comes from knowing you put your heart and soul into your work. I work towards goals and intentions, but most importantly, I believe in having a big purpose in mind: YOUR BIG PURPOSE or YBP. This grand vision drives me and keeps me focused on setting a clear idea in my mind of what I want to build, where I want to go, and who I want to be. Looking to the Future: YBP Do you know Your Big Purpose? I know it's not always clear and we can get overwhelmed with ideas and things we want to pursue and achieve- it is a good idea to think on this for a moment- perhaps you need to define YBP yet, or maybe you know it but have gotten sidetracked. If so, take a peek at Finding Your Big Purpose, with some pointers and tips to refresh and get back on track! Peace, Love & Blessings, Britta Want to share Your Big Purpose? Let us know what you are dreaming of!! Who knows, maybe we can help support you to get you there! Working together is always better than working alone! Creative Capital Design (our design studio) along with IFD has worked with many clients, and interns, done many informational interviews, and provided guidance and mentoring to students and young professionals- it's part of what we love to do- reach out anytime to inquire!

  • 4 Steps to Spring Clean Your Mind, Body & Soul

Spring clean. Declutter. Purge. Refresh. We hear these words often around this time of year with the arrival of warmer weather and the first quarter of the year under our belts. Articles and newsletters are flooding our inboxes with spring cleaning lists and how-to’s on all things spring, but what we don't hear as often is conversations about reflecting. Before you declutter or purge or refresh, do you think about why an experience came into your life? The good it brought you? The memories? As Marie Kondo suggests, reflect and express gratitude for the things you let go of. This is also true for time that has passed. Reflecting gives you a moment to pause, sort through your experiences, and allow them to create meaning. These meanings become learning, which can inform future mindsets and actions. So ask yourself, besides spring cleaning my house, where else in life is Spring Cleaning & a Refresh beneficial? 1. Your Wardrobe With the change in weather comes a change in our closet. The puffer coat you wore all winter long and the boots with salt stains can be cleaned off, stored away, or donated if you’re ready to part ways. Don’t forget to reflect on the good times you had together. A very important step. Are you looking to find new ways to wear some of your staple pieces? A spring closet overhaul doesn’t necessarily mean buying a new wardrobe but allows you to reinvent the clothes you already have. A wardrobe refresh such as this is accessible and sustainable (which we love). 2. Your Personal Space The space you live in and spend most of your time in is a reflection of who you are. It affects your mood, too. This is not about cleaning or purging; it’s about looking at your surroundings and reflecting on what’s working and what’s not. Simply putting files in a cabinet versus on your desk, adding a plant in the corner of the room, or lighting a candle first thing in the morning can change the energy of your space and give you the refresh you’re looking for. 3. Your Mind Even before the pandemic, many adults in the U.S. reported sometimes feeling too busy to enjoy life. It’s easy to get caught up with everyday tasks and responsibilities, which sometimes cram our brains with information and no room just to be. The antidote to a free mind is setting aside time to let your mind wander. Mind-wandering lets thoughts pop up spontaneously that aren’t connected to the task at hand or your surroundings but driven by the headspace that you’re in. This simple (yet effective) low-key method is a way to refresh the “toolbox” you call your brain. Mindfulness: Being present and exerting our ability to be mindful not only makes us happier, but it can also help us deal with pain more effectively, reduce our stress and decrease its impact on our health, and improve our ability to cope with negative emotions like fear and anger. (Halliwell, 2017).”  For more reading on Mindfulness, visit here. 4. Your Soul "Soul searching—or the idea of nourishing your soul—is an important exercise every person can and should partake in. Simply put, it’s the desire to look more deeply for meaning in your life, says Kelley Kitely, LCSW, a Chicago social worker and best-selling author of MY self: An Autobiography of Survival. “Most people engage in soul searching (or should) when life seems out of sync, or when they're in a rut, experiencing negative feelings towards their careers or relationships" she explains. But if you don’t know where to start—or exactly what to do—try following these expert-recommended tips to nourish your soul and find that deeper meaning in your everyday existence". From Ophra.com. Read the full article here Spend some time alone. Then, connect with new people But, disconnect with social media Try a new hobby To refresh means to give new strength or energy to something, to reinvigorate it. Imagine that feeling spread throughout all areas of your life. Take the time this Spring season (and any other time you feel called to) to reflect on the past, your present, and where you can do a little refreshing for your future. Happy Refreshing & Renewing! • 10 Essential Circular Design Strategies to revolutionize your Process

Have you had the pleasure of learning about TEDS TEN? Let me introduce you to this fantastic tool developed by Becky Earley, Kay Politowicz, and the research group at Textiles Environment Design (TED) at Chelsea College of Arts. It's an absolute joy to share with you! While the tool was initially developed for textile designers, it's applicable to anyone in the fashion design process. It's an ingenious and enjoyable way to enhance our design process, and who doesn't need more fun in their day? When it comes to designing for sustainable fashion, TEDS TEN offers a helpful starting point by asking essential questions that Becky and her team ask at the beginning of every design project. These questions include: Why are we making something? What will change for the better? Where have these materials come from? What are they made of? What's in them? How have they been processed and manufactured into fabric? Whose hands were a part of this process, and how were those people treated? When the user washes, dries, irons, or repairs the product, what impacts are created? When the user no longer wants the product, will it become redundant, or will someone else use it? As sustainable textile design researchers, Becky and her team base any TED design brief on these questions, and they build their product around them, seeking to make improvements by design. The framework they use, called "The TEN," creates a map of the sustainable design landscape. We use these ten starters for any new project to inspire and drive our work. Overall, TEDS TEN is an excellent tool to incorporate into your design process to ensure a more sustainable and positive impact. So Can a pack of cards be used as a tool for change? In addition to using TEDS TEN as a starting point for sustainable fashion design, design teams can take it a step further by doing workshop sessions. Using these ten cards as a guide, they can plan out their strategies for achieving each one of the suggested considerations. Workshopping is a collaborative approach that encourages team members to share ideas, brainstorm, and come up with a plan of action that aligns with their design goals. During workshopping sessions, design teams can explore each consideration in-depth, discuss challenges they may face, and brainstorm solutions that align with their sustainability goals. By doing so, they can create a more comprehensive and effective plan for designing sustainable fashion products that meet the needs of their customers while reducing the impact on the environment. Ultimately, TEDS TEN and workshopping sessions can be powerful tools in helping design teams create sustainable fashion products that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible. By incorporating these considerations into their design process, design teams can take meaningful steps toward creating a more sustainable and equitable future for the fashion industry. Below are "Teds Ten" Strategies to build into your Design Process "The Ten" from Circular Design Org 1. Design to Minimise waste This strategy encourages designers to minimize the waste at the outset that we need to avoid producing stuff that doesn't work, that people dont want. 2. Design for Cyclability This strategy explains how when you design for cyclability, the thought process is very different, but connected to, the practice of recycling textiles. 3. Design to Reduce Chemical Impacts This strategy is about appropriate material selection and processes for any product to minimize environmental impacts. 4. Design to Reduce Energy and Water Use Energy consumption and water usage in the textile industry are extremely high and occur at each stage of the lifecycle of textiles – at the production stage, in the use phase (where consumers use and care for textiles and garments), and at the end stage (which covers either disposal and/or re-use of the material. 5. Design that Explores Clean and Better Technologies Replacing systems of production with less energy consumption and smarter technologies to reduce environmental impacts. 6. Design That Takes Models for History and Nature This strategy is about how much textile designers can find inspiration and information for future sustainable design from studying and reflecting upon nature as well as textiles, habits, and societies of the past. 7. Design for Ethical Production This is about design that utilizes and invests in traditional craft skills in the UK and abroad. It is about ethical production which supports and values workers' rights, and the sourcing of fair trade materials. It questions what ethical production means, and how it differs for each scale of production and manufacture. 8. Design to Reduce the Need to Consume This strategy is about making stuff that lasts, stuff that we want and wants to keep and look after, and the design and production of textiles and products which adapt and change with age. This strategy is also about exploring alternative forms of design and consumption such as co-design and collaborative consumption. 9. Design to Dematerialise and Develop Systems & Services This strategy introduces the concept of designing systems and services instead of, or to support, products, e.g. lease, share, and repair. 10. Design Activism In this final strategy, we encourage designers to leave behind the product and work creatively with the consumers and society at large. It is about designing events and communication strategies beyond product design to increase consumer and designer knowledge about fashion and textiles' environmental and social impacts. Here, the textile designer becomes a ‘Social Innovator’. We reflect on how much has changed for textile designers, and how much potential for the future there is! CHALLENGE!
