  • How to Achieve Conscious Design in Fashion

Conscious Fashion Design Principles Curious about Conscious Design- what it means and how can you implement it into your own design process? Check out our Conscious Design on-demand webinar. Listen in as we chat with Author and Entrepreneur Ian Peteraman, based on his book Conscious Design in which he breaks down the design process into 5 Key Pillars to achieve Consciousness in design. When designing a new item, fundamental elements are usually taken into account: shape or silhouette, line, color, and texture. As the industry grows more conscious of our environmental impact, a new element is added to the list: Consciousness. So what is Conscious Design? What does that mean? Conscious design is ethical, sustainable, organic, animal-friendly, or vegan. It is the idea of caring about where your fashion comes from, how much energy and resources went into them, and who made them. It's a process of respecting the planet and all those involved in creating said fashion. Yes, it's true that it's easier said than done; however, as we know from watching many brands achieve a conscious design goal, it is not impossible. The more companies, brands, and consumers start looking at the world (and design) more consciously, the better off our planet will be. Ian Peterman's Book Conscious Design Author of the book " Conscious Design," Ian Peterman says there are five pillars of conscious design: Observation Impact Connection Inclusion Legacy Incorporating these five pillars into the design, brands, and products they produce will help restore and sustain our planet. That is a big enough "why" in our minds, but let's go deeper into the pillars and give you more reasons to use this philosophy. On-Demand Lesson: Watch here Ian Peterman 1. Observation Being conscious involves observing. By dedicating time to observe, we enhance our understanding of what we perceive through sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Increased observation leads to a deeper comprehension of the details. Consequently, the more you observe the topic, the more consciously you will design. In design, you don't simply put something on paper and proceed with it. You evaluate how the design will function as a whole, including materials, manufacturing, and shipping. To determine its success, you invest time in contemplation, brainstorming, research, and understanding the process and its impact on your business and customers. By dedicating time to assess how your designs influence the world's well-being, the benefits you receive surpass those of any product hastily placed on the shelf. Factory 2. Impact Regrettably, it's quite typical for companies to overlook the overall impact of a product. Many adopt the mindset of releasing the product as inexpensively and swiftly as possible to meet deadlines and sales goals, While it's impossible to fully understand the product's impact before it reaches the public, maintaining awareness throughout the entire process can significantly influence its effect on the world. Whatever you create will have an effect. Most creators are aware of how their designs will affect their consumers, as they tailor products for their target audience. However, we may not be aware of both the immediate or longer term effects. What about the effects of the materials used and the working conditions? The impact of your design and product is your responsibility. Group of women enjoying company 3. Connection To connect is to join together, to provide access and communication. All designs connect one thing to another, one human to another, and how it connects the two is essential when thinking consciously. It's no coincidence that when we use an eco-friendly, ethical, or animal-friendly product, we feel better about our experience. A product that is consciously designed to support the systems of our world and not break them down connects us to not just the product itself but the result of the product's impact. 4. Inclusion This principle emphasizes the importance of considering all stakeholders in the design process, not just the end-users or consumers. By integrating Inclusion, designers and entrepreneurs can create products and brands that are accessible, ethical, and beneficial to a diverse range of people, regardless of their background or abilities. It encourages designers to think beyond their immediate target market and consider the broader social and environmental implications of their work. Inclusion also extends to the manufacturing and production process, ensuring fair and ethical practices throughout the supply chain. By prioritizing Inclusion, designers contribute to a more sustainable, socially responsible industry that fosters positive change and creates meaningful impact in the world. What Legacy will you leave? Legacy Consider the possibilities you can unlock by dedicating time to these steps before your begin creating . By beginning with these five pillars and intentionally integrating them into the core of your design process, you will create more thoughtfully designed products, leading to a brighter future for your company, your consumers, and our world. "Legacy branding means you have considered and designed the impact your mission and values will have on future generations. It will also make you think about what you want to leave behind for your family, community, country, and even the planet". Ian Peterman, Conscious Design I thought about leaving a legacy, but I hadn't considered achieving it through my design work. This is my favorite insight from Peterman's book, Conscious Design. Designing with awareness naturally results in a positive influence on people, the planet, and profits, creating a lasting brand and a legacy to be proud of. • Resortwear 2025: The Palm Tree; A Sustainable and Cultural Fashion Statement

Palm Tree Market Trend 2025 Resortwear 2025: The Palm Tree Trend – A Timeless Icon Reimagined Palm trees have long been a symbol of escape—tied to the carefree spirit of island life, warm breezes, and tropical getaways. As we look ahead to Spring/Summer 2025, this iconic motif is making a return to resortwear in fresh, innovative ways. But before we dive into what’s new, let’s take a moment to explore the rich history behind palm tree prints in fashion. A Look Back: The History of Palm Tree Motifs in Textiles The use of palm tree imagery in textiles dates back centuries, particularly in tropical regions where the motif became a cultural symbol. One of the most recognizable iterations is found in Hawaiian prints , which have played a significant role in fashion since the early 20th century. Hawaiian, or "Aloha," shirts first gained popularity in the 1930s, influenced by traditional Japanese kimono fabrics, Filipino barong shirts, and Chinese silks. Early versions were often handcrafted from imported textiles, with bold, nature-inspired motifs—including palm trees, hibiscus flowers, and ocean waves—reflecting the lush landscapes of Hawaii. By the 1940s and ‘50s, Hawaiian shirts became a global phenomenon, worn by Hollywood stars and tourists alike, symbolizing leisure and adventure. In the mid-century, batik and hand-block printing techniques —borrowed from Indonesian and Polynesian textile traditions—also found their way into resortwear, adding depth and artistry to tropical designs. The hand-drawn, organic quality of these prints helped shape the vibrant, sun-soaked aesthetic we associate with vacation-ready fashion today. Runway Looks Resort 2025 Palm Trees in Resortwear 2025: A New Take on Tradition While palm tree prints have always been a staple of resort fashion, this season, designers are pushing the boundaries beyond traditional fabric prints. For Spring/Summer 2025 , we’re seeing an elevated approach where palm leaves take on a more dimensional and textural form. Instead of just appearing as flat, repeated motifs, palms are being reimagined through hand embroidery, laser-cut perforations, beaded embellishments, and appliqué trims . Beaded and embroidered palm tree motif Brands are exploring different materials and textures, incorporating elements like raised relief surfaces, metallic threadwork, and rhinestones to trace the natural contours of the leaves. This technique adds both visual contrast and tactile depth, making each piece feel luxurious and handcrafted. Appliquéd Palm trees These new applications echo traditional textile practices, from Jacquard weaving —which allows for subtle texture variations—to broderie anglaise-style perforations , often seen in vintage resortwear. The result? A modern take on a beloved classic, blending artisanal craftsmanship with contemporary resort aesthetics. Designers Embracing the Palm Tree Aesthetic Several forward-thinking brands are leading the charge in palm tree-inspired resortwear: Orlebar Brown Orlebar Brown: Precision and Purpose Orlebar Brown has elevated the palm tree motif with meticulously designed pieces that blend style and sustainability. Their latest collection features: Swim shorts with photorealistic palm leaf prints Lightweight shirts that capture the essence of tropical landscapes Innovative fabric technologies that minimize environmental impact Desmond & Dempsey Desmond & Dempsey: Artisanal Approach This brand takes a more artisanal approach, offering: Hand-drawn palm print pajama sets Lightweight cotton pieces that tell a story Commitment to sustainable production practices Summersalt Summersalt: Inclusive and Eco-Conscious Summersalt brings a fresh perspective with: Recycled fabric swimwear featuring palm leaf designs Inclusive sizing that celebrates diversity Minimal environmental footprint Palm Tree Mood Board When embracing this trend, conscious fashion lovers should consider: The sustainability of the fabric The authenticity of the design The versatility of the piece The cultural significance of the print A Trend with Deeper Meaning What makes the palm tree motif so compelling in 2025 is its ability to tell a story. Each garment becomes a conversation about: Global cultural exchange Environmental responsibility The beauty of natural design The Timeless Appeal of the Tropical Trend The resurgence of the palm tree motif speaks to the enduring appeal of nature in fashion. Whether through bold, heritage-inspired prints reminiscent of vintage Hawaiian shirts or intricate, three-dimensional embroidery , designers continue to find new ways to celebrate the effortless beauty of the tropics. Looking Ahead Palm Tree Mood Board Color Palette For designers and brands, this trend presents an opportunity to embrace both nostalgia and innovation—breathing new life into an iconic symbol that has defined resortwear for generations. As fashion continues to evolve, the palm tree stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and connection. From the beaches of Hawaii to the runways of Paris, this iconic motif continues to inspire designers and consumers alike. Do you have a favorite vintage Hawaiin palm tree shirt? Share it with us! NAE Shoes and Accessory Brand From sleek court shoes to rugged combat boots, NAE combines modern design with game-changing materials like Piñatex (made from pineapple leaves), AppleSkin, and cork. Every step they take is a step toward a more sustainable future—minimizing waste, using fair labor practices, and sourcing materials responsibly. By choosing NAE, you're not just upgrading your footwear, you're making a positive impact on the world. Let's dive into what makes NAE the go-to brand for conscious consumers. Ethical Makers: NAE's partner factory, which specializes in producing top-quality shoes, is situated about 40 kilometers from Porto, Portugal. It ethically manufactures up to 350 pairs of shoes daily for NAE and other clients. The facility employs 30 people who work across 500 square meters in both offices and production lines. This factory was among the pioneers in recycling used car parts into new materials for shoe production. Additionally, the factory recycles all of its material scraps for various uses. To minimize transport emissions, all materials are sourced from the European market, except for Piñatex, which is imported from the Philippines. Materials: 100% VEGAN & ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS In contrast to traditional vegan shoes crafted from virgin plastic, NAE’s shoe collection is entirely vegan and utilizes eco-friendly vegan leather alternatives. For instance, NAE’s top-selling range is crafted from Piñatex, a remarkably durable material made from pineapple leaf fibers. These leaves, typically thrown away, are sourced from pineapple harvests and processed, with any leftover fibers returned to the fields as fertilizer. This is an entirely eco-friendly process, and the company involved collaborates with pineapple farmers to provide an additional income stream for their businesses.  BLACK VEGAN LOAFER CHUNKY SOLE NAE incorporates organic cotton, which is cultivated without chemicals and relies on 80% rainwater for irrigation, unlike conventional cotton. As a Portuguese brand, NAE also utilizes cork, a highly durable and environmentally friendly material. Cork is obtained from cork oak (Quercus suber) trees. The process of cork farming results in a negative carbon footprint, thus having a remarkably positive effect on the environment. It is waterproof, hypoallergenic, and soft to the touch, making it almost ideal.  NAE crafts their vegan leather using a unique combination of microfibers, such as cotton, polyester, and nylon. Whenever possible, these materials are recycled to produce a durable yet lightweight fabric for their footwear. In 2019, they introduced their RE-MOVE PROJECT, offering two sneaker designs with uppers made from ocean-recovered plastic. Sustainable Materials: " We see sustainability as a path of constant progress. Every day, we take another step on this journey, seeking the most sustainable options to craft our vegan shoes." Paula and Alex Perez Green Apples AppleSkin: This exceptionally sustainable material is crafted from apple juice industry waste. Ethically produced in Italy, it is a low-carbon material that is both practical and remarkably versatile. Highly sustainable material made from the waste from the apple juice industry. Ethically manufactured in Italy, this low-carbon material is practical, infinitely versatile and stunning. This pioneering technology allows the waste cores and skins produced by the fruit juice industry to be reduced to a microscopic powder and used as a substitute for polyurethane to create a vegan material similar to the so-called "feather". The apple particles form the coating that is applied to the eco-friendly microfibers, giving a leather-like appearance to the resistant and durable fabric. Cork Cork: This material is durable and highly eco-friendly. It is water-resistant, hypoallergenic, and extremely soft to the touch, making it incredibly versatile and nearly ideal. Cork is produced by managing nature's resources. It is a natural material that is fully biodegradable and recyclable, with an extraction process that conserves water, is non-invasive, and respects the life cycles of the cork oak. Corn Corn: On Steam Bioeco is a corn-based material. It is washable and breathable. OnSteam Bio-Eco serves as a leather alternative made from corn. The method involves extracting and fermenting corn starch, which is then processed into a polymer and spun into microfibers. These are combined with recycled fibers and treated to create a breathable material resembling leather. Organic Cotton Organic Cotton: It is cultivated from natural seeds that are not genetically modified and without pesticides, ensuring it is safe for the environment and the farmers. This cotton is grown on land where the soil is allowed to "rest" instead of being constantly farmed, preventing soil saturation. Organic cotton relies on approximately 80% rainwater for irrigation, with the remainder provided by irrigation systems, though some crops are entirely rainwater-fed, significantly reducing its dependency on energy and other resources. Recycles PET Recycled PET: Recycled materials are valued for being strong and lightweight. Recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) gives single-use plastic a new purpose. Converting a plastic bottle into vegan shoes reduces the harmful impacts associated with its production, preventing it from contaminating the oceans or the ozone layer if it were to break down or be burned. Although we advocate for the eradication of single-use plastic, we recognize the necessity to manage the plastic already existing on our planet. Piñatex: Organic material is derived from pineapple leaves, which are byproducts of the pineapple harvest. The fibers not utilized in Piñatex are distributed as fertilizer.Piñatex is among our preferred options, developed through a project with which we have a strong connection. In the 1990s, Carmen Hijosa, a Spanish entrepreneur, began exploring an ethical, natural, and sustainable alternative to animal leather. Her research led to the creation of Piñatex, which inspired her doctoral thesis. Today, Ananás Anam, the owner of Piñatex, is a B Corporation certified company. The natural textile is produced in the Philippines. Microfiber: Our microfiber is eco-friendly, hypoallergenic, breathable, and antimicrobial, with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. The microfibers we utilize are sustainable and serve as a great alternative to animal leather. Resembling leather in texture, they are completely vegan and hold the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. This ensures our material is free from Chromium 6, a chemical that poses significant risks to the environment and consumer health. • Beyond the Runway: 30 Reasons Why I Love Being a Fashion Designer

Inspiration Board Today I am focusing on the love of creating & having gratitude for the opportunities and all the positive things being a fashion designer has brought me. It's not so much that I love "fashion" itself, but rather the creation process. As I grew up, I was surrounded by sewing and craft and saw firsthand how intangible ideas come to life. As a result, I fell in love with creating; the first inspiration of an idea, the selection of materials, experimenting with techniques, considering the details, sewing it all together, finalizing the fit, and then seeing the completed work. I am very fortunate to work in a career that I love and am passionate about, and now after many years in the industry, turning those experiences into a way to support & share my knowledge with others Of course, with any career, there are challenges, stressful moments, parts of the job that you may not like, and things you may have to do that aren't your strong suit- but if you turn those situations into teachable moments and growth opportunities, the positives far outweigh the negatives. My early swimwear sketches If the world of fashion tickles your fancy, it's worth noting that countless avenues within the industry can accommodate your passion and skill set. I found my calling as a fashion designer, so I wanted to share with you 30 things I enjoy in that role and offer some resources that will allow you to delve deeper into the fashion design process.
