Hello friends,
Each month at Inside Fashion Design we pause to look beyond the fast pace of the fashion industry and reflect on the signals shaping where it’s headed. The Monthly Thread is our space to highlight the ideas, events, and conversations influencing designers today — from global fashion weeks and sourcing markets to educational panels, cultural inspiration, and emerging sustainability practices.

Our theme for March is research and regenerative design, an approach that encourages designers to look beyond individual products and consider how fashion systems can restore ecosystems, communities, and material cycles.
Here we highlight events and conversations happening across the industry that can help designers observe signals, expand their research, and gather inspiration as they develop new work.

This Month at a Glance
Each Monthly Thread highlights key conversations and signals shaping the fashion industry. In this March edition, we’re focusing on research, regenerative thinking, and the ecosystems that influence design.
🌱 Regenerative Design Conversations. Emerging discussions around materials, agriculture, and circular systems that aim to restore ecosystems rather than simply reduce harm.
🧠 Signal Spotting for Designers. How observing early industry signals — across materials, technology, and cultural shifts — can strengthen creative direction and long-term strategy.
🗓 March Industry Calendar. A curated list of fashion weeks, sourcing markets, sustainability conversations, and creative events happening around the world.
🌎 Regional & Global Connections. From Pacific Northwest creative communities to international fashion weeks, we highlight spaces where designers can connect with the broader fashion ecosystem.
Why Research Matters in Fashion
Before collections are designed, fabrics sourced, or samples developed, the strongest work often begins with research. Research helps designers identify cultural shifts, explore new materials and technologies, understand consumer needs, and gather inspiration from outside the fashion industry. For designers exploring regenerative approaches, research becomes even more important because regenerative design asks us to think about entire systems — not just individual garments. Where does the fabric come from? Where was it made? Was it grown? If so, where? Does that farm use regenerative farming techniques?
Signal Spotting
One of the most valuable skills designers can develop is signal spotting. Signals are early indicators of change — small observations across materials, technology, consumer behavior, or culture that hint at where fashion may be heading. Observing these signals helps designers move beyond simply following trends and instead design with longer‑term context in mind.

3 Industry Signals to Watch — March 2026
🌱 Signal #1:
Regenerative Materials Are Moving Beyond Concept. Increasingly, designers and material innovators are exploring regenerative approaches — systems designed to restore soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Materials such as regenerative cotton, wool from regenerative grazing systems, and plant‑based textiles are gaining attention across the industry.
🧵 Signal #2:
Designers Are Looking Closer at Supply Chains. Trade shows and sourcing markets are becoming important research spaces where designers evaluate transparency, traceability, and production systems — not just fabrics.
🌎 Signal #3:
Creative Inspiration goes beyond fashion. Designers are increasingly drawing inspiration from art, film, architecture, and cultural storytelling, using interdisciplinary ideas to shape collection narratives.

Fashion does not exist in silo. It transcends boundaries, enriched by culture, shaped by retail behavior, and fueled by community.
Attending events, observing collections, speaking with suppliers, and engaging with other creatives allows you to gather signals that will shape stronger design decisions later. And increasingly, those signals point toward design approaches that restore rather than simply sustain.

Reflection Prompts for Designers
If you’re currently developing a collection or exploring new ideas, March is a good time to pause and ask:
• What signals am I noticing across the industry right now?
• Which materials or sourcing innovations could influence my work?
• Where might regenerative thinking shape my design decisions?
• What conversations or communities could deepen my understanding?
