Hello friends,
Each month at Inside Fashion Design, we take a moment to look at what’s happening across the industry—not just through events and opportunities, but through the conversations and signals shaping where fashion is headed. This month's focus is the fashion design and development process.
This is part of the Inside Fashion Design Monthly Series—where we share:→ Where to go (The Monthly Thread)→ What it means (Insights & Inspirations)→ How to apply it (The Monthly Spark inside IFD Connect)

Welcome, May! I hope this message finds you well. There's a lot happening in the world right now, and for me, creativity serves as my outlet, meditation, and escape. I hope it can bring you into that space too. Now, let's dive into this month's focus. If you've been following us monthly or are a regular reader, you've seen our journey through design and development. After months of planning, research, and concept development, we're now at the stage where designers move into execution — turning vision into a tangible product through structure, iteration, and decision-making. Use this month's thread to inspire and support you on your journey.
Design Development & Process: From Idea to Real Product
This is not always the most glamorous phase. But it is one of the most important. This month is about:
Moving from concept to sample
Building systems that support your creativity
Refining through trial, error, and adjustment
Balancing artistry with real-world production
At the same time, the industry reflects on fashion as both art and craft through moments like the Met Gala and the Costume Institute's opening — reminding us that every finished look begins with a process.
4 SIGNALS TO WATCH THIS MONTH

01 — Structure enables creativity, not limits it
Designers with clear development processes — timelines, tech packs, supplier communication — are moving faster and with more creative freedom than those working without structure. Clarity at the start prevents chaos later.
02 — Iteration is the process, not a sign of failure
No product is perfect on the first try. The most successful independent designers treat sampling as a learning tool — each revision is data, not defeat. Reframing iteration as intelligence changes everything.
03 — Art and function are converging, not competing
The Met Gala's 'Fashion Is Art' theme lands at exactly the right moment — as an industry reminder that the most conceptual, boundary-pushing work still requires technical execution. Great design lives at the intersection of vision and practicality.
04 — Digital Product Passports are becoming a real consideration
The EU's push toward mandatory Digital Product Passports is beginning to shape how brands approach development documentation. Traceability from material to finished product isn't just an ethical issue — it's a compliance infrastructure. Now is the time to start building documentation habits.
