For others, it’s the stuff of dreams. This Mother’s Day, discover creative mother-daughter duos who are making magic together. Perhaps the secret is in their intergenerational relationships. BERNADETTE BERNADETTE is a fashion label based in Antwerp, founded by Charlotte de Geyter and her mother, Bernadette. Charlotte, an Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts graduate, hand-draws the brand's signature patterns, which feature florals and botanicals. At the same time, Bernadette, a former buyer for Ralph Lauren, brings her expertise in timeless silhouettes. Their luxurious materials reflect a shared vision of modern luxury. The brand has become a cult favorite with its colorful silk dresses, robes, sleepwear, and interior goods. Rather than following trends, they embrace joyful, relaxed elegance and timeless styles that resist fads. MaisonCléo French mother-daughter duo Marie and Nathalie (Cléo to her friends) Dewet got their start on Instagram when the tops Marie posted there created a rising demand, pushing them to launch their website and company. Marie sources the fabric and designs the apparel which is then handmade to order, including adjusted to your measurements, by her mother Nathalie at home in the north of France. This is slow fashion — with both labor and fabric availability putting a limit on the number of each design they can make. Marie sources surplus fabrics from couture houses and factories as well as vintage and thrifted cotton and trims. They have limited runs and work on exclusive drops with Net-à-porter, Selfridges, and Le Printemps. Each design is handmade-to-order and can be made to any size. The brand doesn't follow any fashion calendar or trend, creating new designs based on seasons, desires, and fabrics. They prioritize handmade clothing and authenticity. The brand is fully transparent, providing information about fabric costs and the time spent making each garment. Luisa Beccaria Luisa Beccaria is a Milanese designer, and her namesake brand has been creating haute couture looks since the 90s. In 2006, her daughter Lucilla joined the design team. The brand offers bridal, ready-to-wear, gowns, and jumpsuits that evoke a dreamy luxury. Celebrities such as Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Halle Berry, and Madonna have worn their looks. The brand values true craftsmanship, unique fabrics, and sustainability achieved through slow fashion, creating timeless shapes and styles that remain relevant yet timeless. Their poetic language aims to communicate a self-confident, romantic woman's fragile yet robust and passionate nature. The dresses or objects are dedicated to all the world's women. VALUES: “The Luisa Beccaria philosophy embraces true craftsmanship, from raw materials to unique fabrics. All are combined with knowledge and professional expertise, the kind of collaboration that breeds sincere and versatile friends in the wardrobe. All achieve superlative quality and ensure the lowest possible impact on the environment. Sustainability is achieved through slow fashion, by creating shapes and styles that adapt to modern luxury yet remain timeless. The brand’s language is evocative and poetic- eccentric at times. It aims to communicate the fragile yet strong, passionate nature of a self-confident, romantic woman, the kind who projects herself in all that surrounds her. Inclusivity is also a key part of the research, as the dresses or objects are dedicated to all the world’s women. These are some of Luisa Beccaria’s values. We strive to shape a new concept of femininity that condenses grace and strength.” From: luisabeccaria.it House of Aama House of Aama is designed and manufactured in Los Angeles by Akua Shabake and her mother, Rebecca Henry. The brand incorporates demographic and historical research into its designs to tell stories through clothing. Their looks have a nostalgic feel, but they engage in contemporary conversations. For example, their 2021 Nude collection explores the various skin tones within Blackness, reflecting family and community legacies of skin color in Black communities. This collection is a timely conversation starter in the Black Lives Matter era, providing a historical perspective on contemporary Black experiences through beautifully crafted clothing. - The Life & Design Journey of Irish Couture Designer Helen Cody
Reposted June 1, 2023 Dear Friends, we are thrilled to feature our Designer Spotlight Irish Couture Designer Helen Cody. Helen is a proud Irish woman and an even more proud cancer survivor. While going through treatment, she reached out to ARC Cancer Support Center, which gave her the coping skills to get through the very emotional, physical, and mental challenges she faced. Below, learn about why she became an ambassador for ARC Cancer Support Center, her involvement in their annual fashion show, and how she is filled with gratitude! From Helen: Did you know that March is by far the most popular time of year for proposals and engagements? Whether you are just engaged or simply doing your research my studio is the perfect place to find your dream dress. As everything is made in my Harold Cross studio the lead times are shorter. We like to collaborate with every bride to make sure all her wedding dress dreams come true 👰🏼we are taking appointments now for our 2020 brides DM for appointments or email helencody@gmail.com . I was considering this dress from my collection for my own wedding last year ❤️ "My cancer diagnosis affected every aspect of my life. My work, my physicality, my home life, my plans. First, there was debilitating fear, the word Cancer is such a frightening word. One I didn't think I would come back from. Then there was the enormity of the surgery. Losing my breasts affected the core of my femininity. Losing my hair became a much bigger loss than I had mentally prepared myself for. Ironically I coped much better with the physical changes than the mental and emotional ones. The biggest loss was any sense of control, I had to let go, fall into the system, and trust that it would fix me and bring me back to normality. I had been aware of ARC''s existence for many years but became particularly aware of their work through the annual ARC fashion show, in which I have taken part, along with many other Irish fashion designers. During my chemotherapy, I became so unwell in every sense. I was so weak from the drugs that I went to my Oncologist after the 4th round and told her I simply couldn't go on. I wanted to quit, not something I do easily. She immediately suggested counseling at ARC for both myself and my husband. I don't know why I hadn't thought of it myself, maybe because I thought that was for other people, preferring to cope privately, but miserably failing. Through several sessions I was given the tools to cope, to separate myself from what the drugs were doing, and to rationalize that this wasn't me, but the drugs affecting me. My husband also got counseling, finding a place where he could express himself openly and feel very safe in doing so. I also found reflexology very calming and helpful. I decided during my treatment that I couldn't go through what I'd been through, experiencing so much love, care, and kindness from so many people, without finding a way to say thank you. The enormous gratitude I feel for the ARC team for the help they gave me at a time when I've never felt more vulnerable, made me want to support them, and in so doing, know that I would be helping others going through cancer. I am very proud to be a brand ambassador for ARC." (from the ARC Cancer Support Center website) Helen Cody, Photo from ARC Cancer Support Center Helen's experience in the world of fashion spans almost 3 decades. Graduating in fashion and textiles from NCAD and then moving to Paris to work for French Vogue and Azzedine Alaia, she developed her skills as a leading stylist for fashion magazines, music videos, TV Commercials, and Celebrities." (ARC Cancer Support Center website) We spoke with Couture Dress Designer Helen Cody about her journey to the top of the design world, and the pivots and challenges she faced along the way. Read on for her words of advice to young designers, as well as her unique career experience! After studying fashion and textiles in Ireland, Cody initially worked as a stylist for celebrities, fashion magazines, music videos, and commercials. Her work took her to London, Paris and New York before she returned home. Now she works in her Dublin studio, specializing in unique or limited edition pieces that often take months to create and use the finest silks, organzas, cashmere and lace. You studied at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin. Tell us about your studies there and how your education prepared you for the industry. https://www.ncad.ie I was so naive entering NCAD. I had always been good at art and home economics in school, but nothing prepared me for the incredibly competitive and overwhelming environment of Ireland National College. There was a rumor going around that there was a clerical error student in 1st year and I spent the entire first year thinking that it was me! College was a bubble and didn’t prepare me in any structured way for industry, but what it did do was stretch my mind to creative possibilities. The Fashion Department was a very competitive environment—with the likes of Philip Treacy and Darryl K in my class we were always vying off each other and constantly raising the bar. I look back now and really value my time in NCAD. What was your design career path after graduation? I left college determined to make it as a stylist: a career path very unfamiliar to most back in the late 80s. I was lucky enough to win a scholarship to French Vogue in Paris straight out of college and so landed in the middle of the fashion capital of the world at 21. It was an incredible introduction to how things should be done. While in Paris, I also interned with Azzedine Alaia, an experience I will never forget. At French Vogue, I was a styling assistant in the fashion editorial dept. In Azzedine’s, I sat with Olivier Picasso (yes, his grandson) doing everything from picking up pins to drilling holes in tiny shells for hours so that they could be beaded into his twine-like knits. I returned to Ireland and developed my career as one of the leading stylists for fashion, commercial, and editorial shoots, building up a strong portfolio which after 8 years got me an agent in New York, Bryan Bantry. I spent 2 years living in NYC while all the time creating my own work and selling it in the Union Square Craft Market. Ireland called again and I came home in 2000 and set up my own label. It went from strength to strength, winning me various awards and ultimately creating a diffusion line that sold 40 stores in its 4th season. Tragedy overtook when my baby son died, and couldn’t continue. Eventually, I retreated back into the anonymous world of tv commercial styling. The draw to create and honor my son was such that in 2006 I launched my couture line in his honor, I have been working as a couturier ever since. Helen Cody It’s so impactful to know you work in honor of your son. You most recently were challenged with breast cancer. How did your health and recovery affect your work? My diagnosis of bilateral breast cancer in January 2018 was, as you can imagine, life-crushing. As I caught up with the devastating news which seemed to get worse as the weeks passed, I employed several people and also had a shop in the center of Dublin. Due to the nature of my work and how personal it is, I had no choice but to close my shop, but, determined to keep the studio going, I managed to juggle treatment and appointments on the good days. I never stopped working. I’m so grateful to my staff for keeping me going in very uncertain times and to my clients who came and supported me knowing I was unwell. Did working as a stylist better help you prepare to have your own line and business? My formative years were styling. I’ve worked with so many international brands from The Foo Fighters to Harvey Keitel, Eric Cantona, The Corrs, The Cranberries, Anton Corbijn, Perry Ogden, and the then President Mary McAleese. You have worked in London, Paris, and New York — How was your experience working internationally? Do you have favorite city, other than home? My biggest love is Paris, even though New York inspired me most creatively. The experience of how structured it is in THE GRID in New York Magazines was such an eye-opener. I had experienced such creative freedom in Dublin and I was introduced to so much commercial structure in NY. Vogue in Paris was all about the best, OF EVERYTHING! Do you have any words of advice for someone wanting to work abroad? I tell all my interns that it's vital to get proper international industry training if they want to survive. That, and persisting and never giving up. In 2015 you were selected for the Critical Portfolio Project as the first fashion designer to be included. You were also named Kerry Fashion Week & IMAGE Magazine’s Irish Fashion Designer of the Year. How did those honors and others affect you? I’m privileged that I’ve won many awards over the years, but although they are nice ego-boosting things at the time, I’m only ever as good as my next idea. Everything I have done in my career has come from passion, and a drive to do better. I’ve never had a commercial plan but I have always been driven by the next creative idea and goal. The critical selection was quite an honor as I’m the only fashion designer to make the cut — something I’m very proud of. What were some of the challenges of launching your own collection? What kind of support did you have? Sadly in Ireland, there is no indigenous manufacturing or HELP for small independents. It was and is a struggle to keep standards high, and function in the very niche market that is bespoke clothing. There is no fashion week in Ireland, so I stage my own shows when I can. Can you tell us about your design process? The market in Ireland for high-end couture is very limited, so I’m constantly having to find ways to promote my business, market my brand, and stay visible and relevant. I find inspiration from everything , there is no one source for me, my mother’s attic as a child was a treasure trove of vintage clothes that I would play dress up in, and I think that’s been a constant inspiration. That and art: Brocante’s in France and my library of vintage and historic fashion refs. Do you travel to events, trade shows, and fabric shows- how do you research and find new ideas, textiles, etc? Do you shop locally for fabrics or import from around Europe? All my fabrics are imported from France and Italy. Ribbons come from Japan and buttons from a favorite supplier in Spain and even zips are from Germany. I travel twice yearly to Premier Vision in Paris, the biggest trade fair in Europe, for fabric and trim purchases. What is the most exciting thing that has happened to you as a designer? It’s going to sound like a cliché, but the thing that makes me happiest is the transformative effect of creating something so perfect and beautiful for my clients, be they private or celebrities. I’ve done the Oscars 4 times, the Cannes film festival, the Tony awards, the world premiere of Bond in London, and endless movie premieres. It’s a joy to see the public’s reaction to a star in my creations. If you could give advice to an aspiring designer—or your younger self—what would you say? Travel, travel, travel. And never give up searching for what makes your heart sing. Thank you, Helen, for your time and for sharing your inspiring story! - Crafting a Filipino Fashion Identity with Dovi Gomez Napora
In the world of fashion, a name that has come to symbolize dedication over fleeting trends is none other than Dovi Gomez Napora who is crafting a Filipino fashion identity. To her, style is not just about the ephemeral; it's an enduring movement. Today, she is a brand meticulously crafting a Filipino fashion identity that transcends borders, paying homage to her homeland. Dovi's journey in the fashion industry began at 15 when she ventured into runway modeling part-time. She quickly found herself featured in numerous print advertisements and runway shows. The glamour, along with the patterns, shapes, and graceful movements of the garments left an indelible mark on her. While developing her fashion career, she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and pursued an educator role, stepping away momentarily from the chic world of Manila's fashion scene. Yet, her true calling was not easily forsaken. A passion for fashion for business called Dovi back to her roots. For her, it was imperative to merge these two facets of her identity – creation and education. In addition, Dovi founded several organizations in the Philippines, including the International Language School in 2007, which bore the name of her firstborn son, the Kirk Bryce Academy of English, and Trendsetter Productions. These ventures catered to her talents and produced various shows and events. Additionally, she introduced GlamourShoppe, a modest fashion store located at the Night Market of Good Shepherd, also known as Ruins in BF Homes, Paranaque City, Philippines. Currently, Dovi resides in Washington, where she is not only a devoted wife to her husband, John Napora, but also a dedicated mother to her sons. John played an instrumental role in furthering Dovi's fashion mission. He translated her visions into reality, sketching her initial designs and infusing them with sleek forms and vibrant palettes. The DOVI Seattle brand emerged in October 2017, manifesting her vision of a harmonious blend of her two homes. This brand caters to women of all ages, underpinned by a fashion philosophy deeply rooted in love. DOVI Seattle made its public debut at The Tacoma Dome's Holiday Food & Gift Festival and garnered immense support from family, friends, the general public, and fashion enthusiasts. The collection Dovi will be showcasing at Fashion in Flight focuses on functional and architectural clothing. Every modernist piece of denim is minimalist with ethical-minded practices. For Dovi, sustainable fashion has been a strong commitment ever since she started the brand, and then it becomes a movement and not a trend. Denim designs in works for the Fashion In Flight Runway show Dovi's passion for fashion emanates from her joy in expressing emotions through art and her desire to convey narratives through craftsmanship. She believes in the creative potential of the Filipino culture and its uniqueness and distinction. Her designs pay homage to her beloved Philippines' rich traditions, artistry, and heritage, incorporating indigenous materials into her creations. Presently, Dovi is also making a profound impact as a proud PACK member (People for Animal Care and Kindness) and an advocate for the FAKE Movement (Fashion for Animal Kingdom and Environment Movement). - Creating Romance, Elegance & Sustainable Couture by Designer Maria Venturini
Creating Sustainable Couture; "Maria Venturini is a Latin American designer who embarked on a fashion career and developed a line called Venturini Couture showing her latest collections during fashion weeks around the world. The romantic style of her design has become a signature inspired by high-end ateliers in Paris and Milan. Her soft sensual styles, fascinating details, and exceptional tailoring are what make Venturini Couture the go-to destination for high-end gowns and evening wear." From Fashion In Flight Originally from Peru and now Living in Walla Walla, Washington, designer Maria Venturini grew up watching her mother and grandmother sew most of her clothing, often using fashionable patterns from Burda magazine. Her mother was naturally stylish and resourceful; Maria grew up watching her mother rounding up clothes from other kids who had outgrowed to create new things from those fabrics. When her mom passed away, she inherited all her mother’s sewing notions, sewing machines, buttons, zippers, and other sewing materials. Maria decided to start sewing but could not understand the patterns. Though Venturini already had three degrees in computer programming, information management, and international Business, she discovered new affinities for design. Then Maria decided to make a career change using her mother’s sewing notions. Her youngest daughter encouraged her to attend fashion school, earning her fourth degree in Fashion Design with honors and the Designer of the Year Award in June 2017. After graduating from The Art Institute of Seattle, Venturini received many invitations to participate in many Fashion Shows, Nationally and internationally, as well as being featured in more than 100 magazines in the US and worldwide. What inspired you to create your collection? I have loved fashion since I was little! Therefore, I decided to follow in the footsteps of my two grandmothers and my mother, being resourceful and adding a little help to the environment. Fashion is one of the most contributing to pollution after car emissions worldwide. I love to buy fabrics in thrift stores, yard sales, and community sales to reuse them, creating something new and unique. How long have you been in business? In June 2017, I embarked on creating a sustainable design label, “VENTURINI COUTURE’ which is a symbol of “Timeless, Elegance, and Unique” because I can only create one look with the recycled materials I have, making my clients feel very special because no one will have the same design. My first Runway show was in September 2017 at the “Bellevue Collection,” granting me The Most Popular Designer by the audience. I have been in Business for the past 6 years, and I wish to continue with my brand and mission, “the commitment to the promotion of sustainable design using the fashion platform as our voice and vision.” What is the story behind your brand? The story behind my brand is sustainability and eco-fashion design using recycled and high-end fabrics for each unique design, making each creation tell us a story. Romance has become a signature of Venturini Couture house inspired by high-end ateliers in Paris and Milan. The minimal yet romantic silhouette and sophisticated lines illustrate women’s strange confidence and sensuality. When I create a new design, rather than sketching, I get the design in my mind by touching the fabric, draping, and continuing to change until the design is done, and then I draw it. My market niche is any woman who wants to feel "Special, Timeless, Unique, and Elegant". I will say, professional women and upper-class clients. Tell us more about your sustainable goals in creating your designs; My designs are 90% to 100% recycled from fabrics and sewing materials bought in a thrift store, yard sales, Goodwill, Saint Vincent of Paul, Salvation Army, community sales, etc. I get fabric, yarns, buttons, zippers, thread, and all sources of sewing materials. I like to create timeless and elegant designs so you can use your garment for a long time, which will always be in fashion. What is this specific collection being shown at Fashion in Flight about? What can the audience expect? Venturini’s collection “Winter Dreams” AW 2023/2024 is dedicated to the upcoming holidays and special occasion moments in any woman’s life. I always look into nature to get inspired by my color palettes: natural fabrics, textures, and earth tones. I love the comfortable look mixed with elegance. My designs are all high fashion. I love to use 3D in all my design mixes, with feathers, sequins, and rhinestones done by hand. I expect the audience in Fashion in Flight to see how elegant and unique you can look for that special occasion or party with just a simple design yet timeless and sustainable. Fashion in Flight, produced by Fashion District NW at The Museum of Flight We are putting fashion into flight on the runway on Saturday, September 30th. Showcasing designers from around the northwest. Learn more here Where can our audience find you? In addition to my social media & website, I do make-to-order for each customer. People can make an appointment so I can take measurements, or they can send me their sizes, and I can make a garment for them. I work via mail for some of my clients, and it works perfectly, maybe one fitting or two. Website: https://venturinicouture.com/ Facebook: @venturinicoutureWA Instagram: @venturini_couture
- From Canvas to Couture; A Self-Taught Artist & Designer Success Story
Greetings! I am excited to introduce multi-media artist Chance Watt. From Canvas to Couture; A Self-Taught Artist and designer, Chance will be showing his latest collection "X" at Fashion in Flight in Tacoma, Washington this coming weekend. Inside Fashion Design will be there to talk with the designers, and to get some behind-the-scenes sneak peeks. To learn more and for tickets, visit https://www.fashioninflight.org. Stay tuned for more coverage after the show! "Chance is not your typical fashion designer- he is a self-taught artist who took from painting on canvas to painting on apparel. Chance, who is from Tri-Cities, Washington, made his talent as a painter known at 19. His bold range of realism and abstraction blends perfectly with his use of gradients between color and the heavy-bodied look, giving an exhilarating feel. To the viewer, Chance is an artist's workhorse, and there are no signs of slowing down. He is constantly pushing the limits to satisfy his artistic appetite. The chosen medium is acrylic, silver leaf, and 24K gold leaf on canvas, leather, suede, and silk. His style is very fresh and original, which makes it unique, contemporary, and modern. Additionally, Chance is in high demand for commissions on personal portrait work and is now creating works for galleries. Mitchell Contemporary is fortunate to exhibit his work and is currently accepting commissions for portraits." From Fashioninflight.com As a multimedia artist, Chance produces work that is alive with energy. His paintings are refreshing to the senses and unite abstraction with realism. His skill set combines highly detailed rendering techniques with vibrant explosions of color. The brightness of his work is so refreshing and uplifting- enhancing your mood just by looking at his creations and I love that you can wear a painting! Each of his paintings is unique, yet they evoke similar feelings for the viewer. His works have a subtle, palpable sensuality balanced by a fiery sense of possibility, passion, and drive. He visualizes these feelings into pieces that satiate both the eye and mind. Showing at Fashion in Flight, Collect X Chance Watt's most recent collection, "x," explores every inch of the color spectrum using an evocative and expressive style. Painterly brushstrokes and intense hues saturate each canvas in the series. Watt's signature style marries graphic realism with total spontaneity and abstraction. Model: Haley Slate Chance delicately and purposefully illustrates the same model against a backdrop of colorful chaos across the series. Brushstrokes writhe across the works, taking the viewer on a journey through the canvas as we take it all in. His "wearable" designs are painted on leather, suede & silk fabrics. Each one is 100% made in-house, from the beginning creation process to hand-sketched concept, to mock-ups and then patterns. After which each is hand-sewn and finished by being hand-painted. Chance is able to draw the viewer in with this energetic composition, inviting us into his world of playful abstraction. Simultaneously, we are tempted to step back from these larger-than-life pieces, endeavoring to digest the scenes. For Chance, there's no slowing down anytime soon. Between his skillfully bold contemplative rendering of abstraction and realism, his paintings are visceral yet sensual. Each concept is a treat. Your mind skips between pops of color and moody sophistication. Chance creates energy with hints of density, giving the eye a slight sculptural feel to play with. His subjects are elevated to a new age and vibe that will constantly stimulate your mind with ever-changing narratives. - How to Harness the Power of Giving; Volunteering to Transform Your Fashion Career
Reflecting on my role as Event Coordinator for the F4D event, I am reminded of the power of volunteering and the benefits gained through giving time and energy. Read on to learn how to harness the power of giving, and ideas on volunteering to transform your fashion career. What an end to September it was! I was invited to take on the role of the Event Coordinator for Fashion 4 Development (F4D) 11th annual Sustainable Goals Banquet and Ladies Luncheon during the United Nations General Assembly week in Manhattan. The event focuses on sustainability and positive change within the fashion industry. Not only was this a new and exciting venture for me, but I was challenged in new ways, learned a lot, and connected with many wonderful volunteers, producers, press, and the F4D team. I always enjoy a good challenge, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and being involved in fashion that positively impacts the world. The first order of business was to get up to speed by connecting and hearing from the event's Co-producer, Kelly Darr. Kelly has been co-producing this event for 11 years and has the run of the show down pat. She filled me in on the overall show, things to be prepared for, the players involved, and the teams of volunteers required to support the event to make everything run smoothly. After she shared the event details, experiences of past events, and what the role entailed, I had no time to waste. I had a quick turnaround to achieve my first challenge- recruit up to 100 volunteers that it would take to support the event. I contacted friends, family, industry connections, fashion schools, non-fashion schools, and fashion industry platforms. This was time-consuming but worth making new acquaintances and reconnecting with some I had lost contact with and was FUN! I had a lot of great conversations and will now enjoy these new and rekindled connections. The next step was managing the volunteer sign-ups, dates and time shifts they could work, and the roles they would fill. I will be the first to admit I am not a spreadsheet kind of gal- I am creative and would rather be doodling, doing research, or creating a mood board than building spreadsheets. When I had to figure out how to manage and track up to 100 volunteers, I knew spreadsheets would be in my future, and I will admit spreadsheets in the past have made me cry (for real). After researching, I found an online tool for volunteer sign-ups (jotform), which generated Excel files and became a saving grace for the task. Another lifesaver was recruiting both my sisters to help. One of my sisters has recently retired from being a Product Owner-Engineering Senior Consultant manager and is a whiz at spreadsheets and managing teams. My other sister just so happens to be an Event and Volunteer Coordinator.....so I did a smart thing by asking them to join me as the first 2 volunteers! Both happily obliged, spent many hours preparing, and made the trip to NYC to help at the event in person- now that is some sisterly love! Shout out to them, as they were instrumental in organizing and managing the volunteer teams (and I learned a thing or two about spreadsheets)! Another shout-out and saving grace was the Founder of Fashion Mingle. If you aren't familiar with Fashion Mingle, check them out. I have been a member and have been following them for years. They have over 10,000 members, hire interns, offer resources, a fashion industry directory, and produce industry events. When I reached out to them to share our need for volunteers, they agreed to support and bring in several of their members who they know personally and would be perfect for filling specific positions. Founder Melissa Shea and partner Sneha Andani went above and beyond in supporting the event and took it on with 100% effort and energy as if it were their event. In addition to bringing in volunteers, Melissa managed the check-in team, and Sneha worked the Talent escort team, both crucial and instrumental tasks at the event. What made it even more special was that we had a tremendous response to our outreach to recruit volunteers! We had friends and friends of friends sharing, recommending, introducing, and spreading the word. We quickly had 100 volunteers sign up to help. Every day, I would see sign-ups throughout the Jotform- watching the volunteer count grow longer every day. So, what exactly did our volunteers do? They did everything from setting up and guest check-ins to escorting VIPs and stuffing gift bags. They also assisted the producers, helped backstage, and did anything else that came up to ensure a smooth event production. With 2 events with almost 300 guests each, it took several teams to make it happen. We had a Check-in Team, a Talent Escort Team, a Special Services Team, a Banquet Team, a Gift Team, and a Delivery Team along with help for awards, exhibition, backstage, PR Assists, and production Assists. Some of our amazing volunteers Going through this experience made me think more about volunteering in the fashion industry. Typically most students need or want an internship, but if you can't find an internship, or are not a student but looking for a way to support and with an option to do something with less commitment, consider gaining the benefits of volunteer work. Why volunteer? Here are our top 5 HEALTH benefits: Volunteering can improve your mental health by reducing stress, boosting self-esteem, and providing a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Volunteering enhances career prospects by building a network, developing new skills, and demonstrating a commitment to social responsibility to potential employers. Volunteering fosters a sense of community by connecting individuals with shared values and interests, creating bonds, and strengthening social ties. Skills gained through volunteering, such as teamwork, leadership, and communication, can be applied in various areas of life, including work, relationships, and personal growth. Volunteering promotes a more compassionate and empathetic society by exposing individuals to diverse perspectives, encouraging understanding, and inspiring acts of kindness and service to others. "Having the opportunity to be a talent escort at the 2023 United Nations Fashion Gala, and the annual United Nations First Ladies Luncheon, was easily a highlight of my entire year. As my VIP guests arrived at each event, I was their go-to lady from start to end for anything that would be helpful for them & team. Beginning first at the Green Carpet, to escorting them to their tables and assisting with navigation to the stage for each speech, I am so grateful for the unique opportunity to have been rubbing shoulders with people who are changing the world. During the First Ladies Luncheon, I especially connected with Alina Karimamusama. Widely admired by royalty guests, industry leaders, and staff alike, Alina's speech & presence made the First Ladies Luncheon even more special for all in attendance. On a personal note, after several times Alina & her team insisting, I was obliged to join her in photos, and we already have plans on the calendar to connect socially before her return to Zambia. Isn't it wonderful how fashion has the power to bring such a powerful group of men and women across the globe together for such spectacular events? The relationships built during these events are critical for the global industry at large, making it a true privilege to have been trusted in this role.
